Leapmotor’s Range-Extender Tech Seen Supporting Stellantis’ EV Strategy

Future Leapmotor models launched in Europe could be developed directly on existing Stellantis platforms, such as STLA Medium and SmartCar.

According to Autocar, Leapmotor’s range-extender technology is under evaluation by Stellantis and could be deployed across multiple European brands within the group.

Leapmotor currently offers both battery-electric (BEV) and extended-range (EREV) variants of its B10 and C10 SUVs in overseas markets.

The range-extender system uses a small gasoline engine as a generator to continuously recharge the battery.

Official figures show that the C10 EREV delivers a combined driving range of around 950 km with a full battery and full fuel tank, while WLTP-rated carbon dioxide emissions are approximately 10 g/km.

Leapmotor International CEO Tianshu Xin said the range-extender technology is not intended solely for Leapmotor vehicles and could be applied to other brands within the group, including Vauxhall-Opel, Citroën, Peugeot, DS and Fiat.

In the current European market, consumer adoption of BEVs remains constrained by concerns over range and charging infrastructure. Xin said range-extender technology represents a viable transitional solution that can effectively ease range anxiety.

Stellantis currently holds a 51% stake in Leapmotor’s international operations, providing a solid foundation for technology sharing and resource synergies between the two companies. Beyond powertrain cooperation, platform sharing is also under evaluation.

Xin added that future Leapmotor models launched in Europe could be developed directly on existing Stellantis platforms to better meet local regulatory requirements and consumer preferences.

Both sides are assessing multiple platform options, including STLA Medium and SmartCar, with the range-extender system viewed as one of the earliest areas of potential collaboration.

Leapmotor’s B10 is scheduled to enter production in Spain later this year and will be built on the same production lines as models such as the Opel Corsa, Peugeot 208 and Lancia Ypsilon.

Localized manufacturing and platform sharing are expected to significantly reduce development and manufacturing costs.

In addition, Leapmotor’s highly vertically integrated supply chain, with around 65% of core components developed in-house, provides further scope for deep cooperation in component sourcing and electric powertrain systems.
