Renault to Develop New Car on Geely GEA Platform, Offering Both EV and PHEV Versions

The new vehicle will mainly target overseas markets such as Southeast Asia and Latin America.

According to AutoPix, Renault’s China R&D team is working on a new New Energy Vehicle (NEV) model based on Geely’s GEA platform, offering both fully electric and plug-in hybrid powertrains.

This SUV will have bodywork partly developed independently by Renault, while the overall architecture and chassis will largely be adapted from existing Geely Galaxy brand products, reducing costs and shortening the development cycle.

In the second half of last year, Renault quietly established its China R&D center “Advanced China Development Center” (ACDC) in Shanghai, aimed at developing EVs for Europe. Through ACDC, Renault has cut vehicle development time by more than half—from at least 3–4 years to just 16–21 months.

The first model developed by ACDC, the Twingo E-Tech, is now complete. Renault is also bringing more vehicle development projects to ACDC, including several EVs sharing the Renault AmpR Small platform with the Twingo E-Tech, as well as a model jointly developed with Geely. The AmpR Small platform mainly covers small EVs in the A0 to A segments, while cooperation with Geely fills gaps in Renault’s larger-size NEV lineup.

Sources reveal that Renault’s focus in Europe is small EVs, while the jointly developed vehicle with Geely will target Renault’s other core markets such as South Korea, Southeast Asia, Latin America, and North Africa.

It’s worth noting that the GEA platform is one of Geely’s core assets, currently used primarily for developing Geely Galaxy brand models. Renault’s project is among the first external collaborations on the GEA platform. Previously, Geely’s partnerships with Renault, Volvo, Smart, Polestar, and Jiyue were all based on the CMA platform.

Renault’s deepening collaboration with Geely will be a key pillar in exploring its NEV business, while Geely sees the global cooperation with Renault as a crucial springboard for accelerating its international expansion.
