William Li revealed that the third-generation ES8 will not be equipped with electric side steps, differing from ONVO’s L90.
Recently, a netizen spotted the all-new NIO ES8 undergoing road testing along the G318 Sichuan–Xizang battery swap route.
According to NIO CEO William Li, on the morning of August 9, the third-generation ES8 officially began its Everest journey. The planned route will start from Chengdu, covering a total of 2,950 km, passing 15 battery swap stations, spanning an altitude difference of 3,980 meters, and marking the full opening of the G318 Sichuan–Xizang battery swap route.

As the launch of the third-generation ES8 approaches, Li has gradually released more details about the new model.
On the evening of August 12, Li disclosed in a car owners’ group chat that the third-generation ES8 would not feature electric side steps. He explained that the decision was based on vehicle ingress and egress convenience—if the design makes it as easy to get in and out as an MPV, then electric side steps are unnecessary. This design difference also serves to distinguish it from the higher-positioned ES9, which will be equipped with electric side steps.

This decision sparked user discussion, with some arguing that removing electric side steps could affect convenience for elderly passengers and children. However, NIO appears confident in the third-generation ES8’s optimized body design.
Interestingly, Li previously remarked that once people see the third-generation ES8, they will understand why NIO is in no rush to release an MPV. Many users now expect it to be a vehicle combining SUV-like off-road capability, MPV-level cargo space, and the flagship quality of NIO’s top-tier models.

Recently, the third-generation ES8 has completed new vehicle and range filings. It measures 5,280 × 2,010 × 1,800 mm with a wheelbase of 3,130 mm — an increase of 181 mm in length and 60 mm in wheelbase over the current model — offering significantly improved third-row space and even accommodating a large-capacity front trunk.
In terms of power and range, the vehicle features dual motors (180 kW + 340 kW) for a combined output of 520 kW, paired with a CATL 102 kWh battery, delivering a CLTC range of 635 km. The curb weight is 2,630 kg.
According to the plan, the third-generation ES8 will officially debut on August 20, hold a technical presentation and announce pre-sale prices on August 21, and be officially launched with deliveries beginning on September 20 at NIO Day 2025.
