Global EV Battery Installations Hit 811.7 GWh in Jan–Sept 2025: CATL Holds 36.6%, BYD 17.9%

In Jan–Sep 2025, six Chinese companies ranked among the global top 10 in EV battery installations, with CATL and BYD accounting for 54.5% of the total.

On Nov. 4, South Korean market research firm SNE Research released its report on global EV battery installations for January–September 2025.

Data showed global EV battery installations (EV, PHEV, HEV) reached 811.7 GWh over the period, up 34.7% year-on-year (YoY), compared with 602.4 GWh a year earlier.

Among the world’s top 10 battery suppliers by installed capacity, six are Chinese companies, unchanged from Jan–Aug rankings. Together they installed 406.7 GWh, taking a 68.2% global share, up 4 percentage points YoY.

China’s CATL and BYD remained firmly in the top two, with a combined market share above 50%.

CATL continued to rank No. 1 globally with 297.2 GWh installed in Jan–Sep, up 31.5% from 226 GWh a year earlier. Its global share stood at 36.6%, slightly lower than 37.5% a year ago.

Notably, CATL is still the only supplier with a market share above 30%, more than double that of second-placed BYD. Its customers include NIO, Tesla, Xiaomi, AITO and Li Auto.

BYD ranked second with 145.0 GWh installed, up 45.6% from 99.6 GWh a year earlier. Its share reached 17.9%, up from 16.5% a year ago and broadly steady versus Jan–Aug 2025.

Supported by its vertically integrated battery-to-vehicle model, BYD has expanded overseas on strong price competitiveness.

BYD’s European sales reached 120,859 units in Jan–Sep, up 299.5% YoY. Battery installations in Europe totaled 10.3 GWh, surging 246.2%, becoming a key pillar of its overseas push.

Beyond CATL and BYD, CALB, Gotion High-tech, EVE Energy and SVOLT also ranked among the global top 10, with 39.3 GWh, 29.7 GWh, 21.9 GWh and 20.5 GWh installed, and market shares of 4.8%, 3.7%, 2.7% and 2.5%, respectively.

The remaining four positions in the top 10 were held by Korean and Japanese suppliers: LG Energy Solution, SK on, Samsung SDI and Panasonic, ranking third, fifth, eighth and sixth with market shares of 9.8%, 4.2%, 2.8% and 4.1%, respectively.
