SAIC Retail Sales Top 1 Million in Q1, Growth Led by Own Brands and Exports

SAIC Motor on April 2 released its March and first-quarter 2026 production and sales data, reporting monthly vehicle sales of 376,000 units in March, ranking first in the industry for the third consecutive month.

In the first quarter, SAIC recorded wholesale sales of 973,000 units, up 3% year-on-year, while retail sales reached 1.008 million units, making it the first automaker in the industry to surpass 1 million retail deliveries in a single quarter.

From a structural perspective, SAIC’s self-owned brands emerged as the primary growth driver, with first-quarter sales reaching 657,000 units and accounting for 67.6% of total volume.

Among them, SAIC Passenger Vehicle performed strongly, delivering 230,000 units from January to March, up 40.4% year-on-year.

New models such as the Roewe i6 and MG4X have been rolled out, forming a key pipeline for future growth.

The commercial and light vehicle segments remained stable. SAIC Maxus sold 59,000 units in the first quarter, up 14.3%, while SAIC-GM-Wuling delivered 328,000 units, continuing to serve as a core volume contributor.

Meanwhile, the joint-venture segment showed signs of recovery, with SAIC-GM posting an 11.3% year-on-year increase in the first quarter.

New energy vehicles represent another key growth pillar. SAIC sold 270,000 NEVs in the first quarter, with the IM Motors brand posting a 96.9% year-on-year increase.

Breaking this down, SAIC Passenger Vehicle NEV sales reached 85,000 units, up 214.6%; SAIC-GM sold 16,000 NEVs, up 221.3%; and SAIC-GM-Wuling contributed 114,000 units, remaining the backbone of NEV volume.

At the model level, the MG4 exceeded 14,000 units in March, marking six consecutive months of monthly sales above 10,000 units.

The SAIC Z7 and Z7T co-developed with Huawei recorded more than 25,000 orders within 24 hours of pre-sales launch.

Overseas markets continued to provide incremental growth. SAIC’s overseas sales reached 325,000 units in the first quarter, up 48.3% year-on-year. The MG brand sold more than 90,000 units in Europe, up 20%, maintaining its scale advantage in the region.

From a product cadence perspective, SAIC has significantly accelerated new model launches in 2026.

Since March, models including the Roewe i6, MG4X, IM LS8, SAIC Z7/Z7T, the fifth-generation Hongguang MINI EV, SAIC Volkswagen ID. ERA 9X, and Cadillac models have been introduced in rapid succession, covering segments from entry-level to mid-to-high-end markets.
