BYD’s Flash Charging Tech Wins First Paul Pietsch Award for Chinese Enterprise

On August 11, BYD announced that its flash-charging technology had won Germany’s International Paul Pietsch Award.

This marks the first time the award, established in 1989, has been presented to a Chinese company, with the winning technology focused on new energy vehicle charging solutions.

Organized by German automotive media group Motor Presse Stuttgart and selected through its automotive media network including auto motor und sport (AMS), the award recognizes products and technologies with significant innovation value in the automotive sector.

Unlike industry awards that often emphasize sales performance or market popularity, the Paul Pietsch Award places greater emphasis on technological breakthroughs and their impact on the automotive industry.

BYD’s flash-charging technology was recognized primarily for improving EV charging efficiency.

Combined with the second-generation Blade Battery, BYD’s flash-charging system can replenish battery capacity from 10% to 70% in five minutes and reach 97% charge in nine minutes.

Beyond overseas market recognition, BYD’s ultra-fast charging technology has also earned domestic endorsement recently.

At a relevant press conference held in July, China’s MIIT listed its 2nd-gen Blade Battery and ultra-fast charging among landmark national innovations, alongside controlled reusable rocket recovery technology.

In recent years, BYD has continued investing in high-voltage platforms, charging technologies, and charging infrastructure.

Its flash-charging technology has already begun expanding across both domestic and overseas markets.

As of the end of June 2026, BYD had built 7,018 flash-charging stations across China, covering 325 cities, and plans to expand the domestic network to 20,000 stations by the end of 2026.

BYD’s first flash-charging station in Germany began operations in May this year, becoming the company’s first megawatt-level fast-charging project in Europe.

Under its expansion plan, BYD aims to build around 6,000 flash-charging stations overseas by the end of 2026 through its European dealership network, including approximately 3,000 stations across European markets.

As one of Europe’s largest automotive markets, Germany’s charging infrastructure rollout is advancing alongside BYD’s sales growth in the country.

According to data from Germany’s Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA), BYD registered 5,240 new vehicles in Germany in July 2026, up 365.4% year on year, maintaining its position as the top-selling Chinese automotive brand in the country.

During the first seven months of 2026, BYD’s cumulative registrations in Germany reached 31,492 units, representing a year-on-year increase of 322.8%.
