BYD, Leapmotor, XPeng Triple Sales in Germany as July Market Expands 62%

Germany’s Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA) reported that new passenger car registrations reached 268,068 units in July 2026, up 1.2% year on year.

Battery electric vehicle (BEV) registrations climbed to 78,609 units, up 61.7% from a year earlier, lifting their market share to 29.3%.

By contrast, conventional internal combustion engine vehicles remained under pressure, with gasoline and diesel vehicles accounting for 18.9% and 11.8% of the market, respectively, highlighting the continued acceleration of electrification.

As demand for electric vehicles continued to expand in Germany, Chinese automakers further increased their presence.

Data showed Chinese brands registered a combined 14,563 vehicles in Germany in July, up 190% year on year.

BYD remained the best-selling Chinese brand in the country. The automaker registered 5,240 vehicles in July, a year-on-year increase of 365.4%, raising its market share to 2%.

One of the key drivers behind BYD’s growth was the Seal U DM-i plug-in hybrid SUV (sold in China as the Song PLUS DM-i), which has recently ranked among Germany’s best-selling plug-in hybrid models.

During the first seven months of the year, BYD registered 31,492 vehicles in Germany, up 322.8% year on year.

Meanwhile, SAIC’s MG and Roewe brands registered 3,698 vehicles in July, up 86.2% year on year. Its cumulative registrations for the January-July period reached 19,850 units, maintaining steady growth.

Leapmotor also sustained rapid expansion. The company registered 2,736 vehicles in Germany in July, up 328.8% year on year, bringing its January-July total to 11,138 units, an increase of 311.8%.

Leapmotor delivered 101,267 vehicles globally in July, up 102%, becoming the first Chinese EV startup to surpass 100,000 monthly deliveries. Overseas markets are also contributing an increasing share of its growth.

XPeng also maintained strong momentum. The company registered 1,253 vehicles in Germany in July, up 371.1% year on year.

Its cumulative registrations during the first seven months reached 4,610 units, up 246.4%.

XPeng’s all-new strategic model, the MONA L03, made its global debut simultaneously in Munich, Germany, on July 16, with the all-electric variant starting at €35,600.

In contrast, several established automakers posted declining sales in Germany.

Opel’s July registrations fell 18.1% year on year, while Ford declined 17.0%, Volkswagen dropped 17.9%, and Porsche slipped 4.5%.

Tesla also remained under pressure, registering just 367 vehicles during the month, down 66.9% year on year.

Despite the year-on-year decline, Volkswagen remained Germany’s top-selling brand with 48,003 new vehicle registrations.
