Takeaways
  • XPeng G9L EREV completed a 1,403.8 km nonstop extreme run, hitting 95.11% of its rated range.
  • The G9L averaged 4.5 L/100 km fuel and 3.2 kWh/100 km electricity under 44°C ambient and 79°C surface heat.

XPeng G9L Super Range Extender completed an extreme range test around the uninhabited Lop Nur area in Xinjiang, XPeng Motors said on Aug. 20.

The test vehicle departed from Shanshan, Xinjiang, crossed the Lop Nur uninhabited area and arrived in Jiuquan, Gansu, without refueling or recharging.

It covered 1,403.8 km, with 41 km of indicated range remaining at the finish.

The vehicle was a G9L 1602 AWD Ultra flagship model. With optional 22-inch wheels, its indicated combined CLTC range with a full tank and full battery was 1,517 km.

Based on the actual distance covered, the vehicle achieved 95.11% of its rated range, with average fuel consumption of 4.5 L/100 km and average electricity consumption of 3.2 kWh/100 km.

During the test, the vehicle accumulated more than 1,200 meters of elevation gain. Ambient temperatures peaked at 44.2°C, while surface temperatures reached as high as 79°C.

The vehicle also traveled through more than 300 km of areas without cellular coverage.

For a range-extender vehicle, long-distance testing under high temperatures and challenging road conditions tests more than engine and battery capacity.

It also puts the vehicle’s energy-management and thermal-management systems, as well as overall efficiency, under pressure.

The battery-electric version of the G9L has also undergone a high-intensity range test. A media test of the G9L 702 Max covered 823.3 km in urban Shenzhen at temperatures of 38°C.

The vehicle achieved 122.5% of its rated range, with average electricity consumption of 11 kWh per 100 km.

The result ranked first among the battery-electric SUVs tested by the media over the previous year.

The G9L is XPeng’s next-generation flagship model developed for global markets.

Development began three years ago, with the vehicle engineered to comply with more than 3,000 regulatory requirements across 64 countries and regions.

The model has accumulated more than 6.74 million km of testing worldwide, with road tests conducted across 26 countries and regions.

Positioned as XPeng’s technology flagship in its large five-seat lineup, the G9L is significantly larger than the previous-generation G9 and shares its platform lineage with XPeng’s GX product family.

At the show, XPeng will include the G9L in its “Physical AI” product lineup, alongside the G9L Black Gold Package, X9 Black Warrior Package and a new themed package for the MONA M03.

Beyond vehicles, XPeng will also showcase its IRON bionic robot and technologies related to its Physical AI foundation model at the auto show.
