At RMB 369,800 ($55,140), Li Auto’s flagship i-series model, the i9, has launched at a surprisingly aggressive price.
Priced RMB 90,000 ($13,420) below the Li L9’s RMB 459,800-509,800 ($68,570-$76,030) range and RMB 140,000 ($20,880) below the flagship MEGA’s RMB 509,800 ($76,030), the RMB 369,800 ($55,140) price tag brought a long-awaited surprise to the 22nd major six-seat SUV launch in China’s auto industry.

Li Auto has brought its “all-electric flagship” below RMB 400,000, with standard features including steer-by-wire, four zero-gravity seats, face-to-face seating and rear-wheel steering, bringing the i9’s experience closer to that of the MEGA and L9 while offering an extensive package of chassis and seating hardware.
The price represents not only Li Auto’s need to prove itself in the premium electric-vehicle segment, but also a direct challenge to flagship SUVs such as the NIO ES8, Zeekr 9X and AITO M9.
The models referred to as “Competitor A” and “Competitor B” at the launch were understood to be the NIO ES8 and all-electric AITO M9, respectively, making the two models the most direct rivals Li Auto has in mind for the i9.
Can the Li Auto i9, widely seen as a product on which the company has “gone all in,” carve out a position against these two high-profile rivals?
Li i9’s Value Equation
Li Auto product-line head Li Xinyang’s closing remark at the launch — “Li Auto i9 Home, a flagship that feels more like home” — makes it clear that the i9’s core strength remains the cabin space and experience Li Auto knows best.
Li Xiang positions the i9 as a “top-tier luxury apartment in the heart of the city,” complementing the MEGA Home’s role as a “suburban villa.”
As Li Auto’s all-electric flagship, the i9 carries many of the design and engineering ideas recently introduced with the new Li Auto MEGA Home.

Measuring 5,225 mm in length, 1,970 mm in width and 1,752 mm in height, with a 3,168-mm wheelbase, the i9 is slightly smaller than the MEGA Home and is shorter and lower than the L9, opening up more possibilities for cabin packaging.
The i9 first takes aim at the MEGA Home with its three-row seating space.
The third-row seat cushion measures 500 mm, slightly shorter than the MEGA Home’s 530 mm, but longer than the 477 mm claimed for Competitor A, believed to be the NIO ES8, and the 494 mm for Competitor B, believed to be the all-electric AITO M9, in Li Auto’s comparison chart.
The i9’s third-row seatbacks also offer up to 55 degrees of power adjustment, significantly exceeding the MEGA Home’s 36 degrees, Competitor A’s 40 degrees and Competitor B’s 30 degrees, providing greater flexibility.
Li Auto did not disclose many additional specifications at the launch, instead using a live demonstration to showcase the i9’s cabin-space advantages.

The company drove a cutaway i9 onto the stage, with the interior exposed so that the seating configuration could be viewed in cross-section. Six members of the i9 product team simultaneously demonstrated the zero-gravity seating mode and maximum seatback recline, highlighting the vehicle’s interior space.
With six occupants seated normally, the 1.8-meter-tall passengers on stage could maintain about two fists of knee room in both the second and third rows.
However, all six occupants had relatively average builds, so the actual experience may vary depending on passenger body size.
For ingress and egress, third-row passengers can also quickly enter and exit by either sliding the second-row seats forward or combining forward movement with rotation.

This is enabled by the i9’s infinitely adjustable power rotation for the second-row seats and infinitely adjustable power sliding for the third row.
The second-row seats’ continuously adjustable power rotation enables a face-to-face seating mode and floating table similar to those on the MEGA Home.
Li Xinyang said the i9’s face-to-face seating area is even larger than that of the MEGA Home, highlighting the vehicle’s more efficient use of cabin space.
The i9 also comes standard with four zero-gravity seats, 11 airbags, a 29-inch 6K display paired with a 21-inch 4K screen, and a 10-liter refrigerator, bringing many of the comfort features valued by buyers into the cabin.
Ride and seating comfort, however, depends on more than space, seats and displays. The chassis is equally important.
Li Auto has equipped the i9 with steer-by-wire, 5.3-meter rear-wheel steering, and standard third-generation dual-chamber, dual-valve “Magic Carpet” air suspension with CDC.

Combined with 50,000 Nm per degree of torsional rigidity, the setup is designed to prevent the 5.2-meter-plus SUV from feeling cumbersome or difficult to drive, while limiting body roll through corners and improving stability and driver confidence.
Combined with the i9’s 101-kWh battery, 705 km of CLTC range and a 0.215 drag coefficient that contributes to energy consumption of 15.1 kWh/100 km, the vehicle offers a comprehensive set of standard equipment for everyday use.
The competitiveness of the standard package is clear. But where does the i9 fall short of the MEGA Home and L9, and where exactly has Li Auto cut costs to reach the eye-catching RMB 369,800 ($55,140) price? The most obvious answers are intelligent driving and audio.
Li i9’s Trade‑Offs
The Li Auto i9 saves on the single Mach M100 chip and the 2,400-watt peak-output Li Auto Home Music Hall audio system.
The new model comes standard with a single Mach M100 chip delivering 1,280 TOPS of computing power and just one forward-facing lidar.
The dual-M100 setup reported by several media outlets before the launch instead becomes an optional package priced at RMB 20,000 ($2,980) for a limited period, versus an official price of RMB 30,000 ($4,470).

This is the same hardware configuration used by the MEGA Home and L9, combining two M100 chips with four lidars for assisted driving.
The other major difference is the audio system.
The MEGA Home and L9 both feature the “9.3.6 Flawless Star Ring Theater” audio system, with 33 speakers and 5,440 watts of peak output, along with Livis Pods spatial-audio headrest speakers for a more immersive listening experience.
By comparison, the i9 comes standard with a 7.3.4 speaker layout featuring 23 speakers and 2,400 watts of peak output.
Even the Li Auto Home Theater system, available for RMB 10,000 ($1,490) during the limited-time offer versus an official price of RMB 20,000 ($2,980), appears to fall somewhat short of the audio experience offered by the other two models.
The i9’s floating combination table is another optional item, priced at RMB 3,500 ($520), whereas it comes standard on the MEGA Home.

Overall, Li Auto has retained details that reinforce the vehicle’s premium positioning, including the welcome light carpet, diamond-pattern air vents and diffuse-wrap ambient lighting, while making measured trade-offs in audio sophistication and leaving the choice of the upper limit of its assisted-driving capability to buyers. That is how it arrives at a price designed to turn heads.
If these options are included, excluding the second- and third-row electrically dimmable glass that is optional on both the MEGA Home and L9, the i9’s price rises to RMB 403,300 ($60,120), or RMB 423,300 ($63,100) after the launch-period incentives expire.
The resulting price gap is broadly in line with the positioning overlap between the Li Auto i8 and L9.
Whether in the cabin or chassis, the i9’s standard equipment largely consists of technologies from Li Auto’s second-generation electric platform.
Their costs are spread across multiple models, including the i6, i8, MEGA and L9, keeping them within Li Auto’s controllable cost structure.
That makes the RMB 369,800 ($55,140) price particularly effective at attracting attention.
Unlike many other features, however, the i9 has one potentially high-cost product innovation: the rear crash beam integrates the air-suspension reservoir.
Li Auto says the integrated structure uses its highest-strength proprietary aluminum alloy, combining rear-impact protection and the high-pressure air reservoir for the air suspension in a single aluminum beam.

The freed-up space increases utilization of the rear section while also improving rear crash protection.
That immediately raises a pointed question: If the i9 is hit from behind and the impact damages the air-tightness of the chamber, would the entire crash-beam assembly have to be replaced, potentially making repairs more expensive than on other models?
Li Auto’s response is that, while meeting China’s mandatory safety standards, the structure can withstand rear-impact energy equivalent to 3.3 times the national standard requirement for a 50-km/h rear collision.
Even if the integrated reservoir loses its air-tightness, the gas retained inside the air spring itself will not escape instantaneously, meaning the suspension will not collapse completely.
More importantly, Li Auto acknowledged that the crash beam’s materials and manufacturing costs are higher, but said owners will still be charged for repairs at the same rate as a conventional rear crash beam. In other words, Li Auto will absorb the additional cost.
These trade-offs in product capability, combined with Li Auto’s safety backstop, may be the bet the company is placing on the i9.
Li Auto’s All‑In Play
At this point, the Li Auto i9 has to confront the question raised at the beginning: Can it carve out a position between the NIO ES8 and all-electric AITO M9?
At its official price, the i9’s advantages are already clear from the comparison table presented at the launch.
It offers a lower price, more generous third-row power seatback adjustment, the flexibility of four zero-gravity seats combined with second-row rotating face-to-face seating, rear-wheel steering and energy consumption of 15.1 kWh/100 km. In terms of cabin versatility, passenger comfort and chassis hardware, the i9 holds several advantages.

Given that the all-electric AITO M9 starts at RMB 499,800 ($74,470), the i9’s most direct rival may be the six- or seven-seat NIO ES8, which starts at RMB 406,800 ($60,640).
Compared with the all-electric SUV, which is approaching 150,000 deliveries, the i9 is somewhat less competitive in powertrain performance.
The Li Auto i9 produces a peak 400 kW and accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.9 seconds, below the NIO ES8’s 520 kW and 3.97-second 0-100 km/h time. Perhaps reflecting its focus on family users, the i9 delivers a lower level of outright performance than the NIO ES8.
In terms of dimensions, the i9’s 3,168-mm wheelbase is slightly longer than the NIO ES8’s 3,130 mm, but its 5,225-mm body is 55 mm shorter. It therefore gives up some absolute cabin space, while the NIO ES8’s five-, six- and seven-seat configurations theoretically allow it to cover a broader range of customer needs.
As for the NIO ES8’s standard Shenji chip and 31 perception hardware components versus the i9’s optional dual-M100 setup, the ultimate value of these hardware differences will depend on how the two companies’ assisted-driving systems perform on the road.
Given market inertia and consumers’ differing aesthetic preferences, challenging these two established rivals will be difficult.

But with Li Auto’s range-extender business under pressure and the i-series yet to establish itself as a premium product line, the company has nevertheless chosen to go all in on the i9 at RMB 369,800 ($55,140).
Can the arrival of the Li Auto i9 prove that the company can sell its vision of “home” in the all-electric market at RMB 369,800 ($55,140)?
The answer will come in the deliveries over the next few months.
