BYD could become the first overseas car company to customize mini vehicles for the Japanese market, with a new electric K-Car model expected to launch in 2026.
Recently, the president of BYD Auto Japan revealed in a media interview that the company’s new Kei Car is being developed based on the design of Honda’s N-BOX. He also mentioned that BYD hopes to release this product sooner to capture market share. More test images of the model have also been posted on social media.

The new model maintains the unique boxy shape typical of Kei Cars, with a double A-pillar design at the front to reduce blind spots. Additionally, the rear side of the car will feature sliding doors, making it easier for passengers to enter and exit in narrow spaces. This model will also cater to Japanese consumers’ demand for “space utilization” and “multifunctionality,” with features like magic seats and an expandable trunk.
The BYD Kei Car is expected to be equipped with a 20kWh battery pack, supporting fast charging up to 100kW, with a WLTC range of 180 kilometers. To adapt to regions like Hokkaido, BYD will also include a heat pump air conditioning system.
In 2024, the total passenger car market in Japan reached 4.421 million units, with Kei Car sales accounting for 1.557 million units, or 36.8% of the market share. However, the Kei Car market is still dominated by gasoline models, with electric vehicle (EV) penetration below 5%. Currently, besides commercial vehicles, only two electric Kei Cars from Mitsubishi eK X EV and Nissan Sakura have significant sales in Japan.
Despite a downturn in Japan’s domestic electric vehicle market, BYD has seen counter-trend growth. In May 2025, BYD’s monthly sales in Japan surpassed 400 units for the first time, placing the brand among the top ten imported car brands in the country. The BYD Sealion 7, in its first month on sale, accounted for nearly 60% of the brand’s total sales.
Currently, BYD has introduced the Dolphin, Atto 3, Seal, and Sealion 7 models to the Japanese market. The price of the new Kei Car is expected to be lower than the current Dolphin model, which is priced at ¥2.9 million (JPY, $20,700).
