Global EV Battery Usage Reaches 504.4 GWh in H1 2025; CATL Holds 37.9%, BYD 17.8%

CATL and BYD together account for 55.7% of global EV battery usage in H1 2025; six Chinese firms rank top ten.

On August 4, Korean market research firm SNE Research officially released its report on Global EV Battery Usage from January to June 2025. According to the data, global electric vehicle battery usage reached a total of 504.4 GWh in the first half of the year, representing a 37.3% year-on-year increase compared to 367.4 GWh during the same period in 2024.

Based on battery installation volumes, six of the top ten global EV battery manufacturers in the first half of 2025 were Chinese companies, maintaining the same rankings as the previous month. These six companies are: CATL with 190.9 GWh, BYD with 89.9 GWh, CALB with 21.8 GWh, Gotion High-Tech with 17.9 GWh, EVE Energy with 13.6 GWh, and SVOLT Energy with 12.9 GWh.

CATL continued to dominate the global market, with battery installation volume reaching 190.9 GWh from January to June, a year-on-year increase of 37.9%. Its global market share stood firmly at 37.9%, up slightly from 37.7% during the same period last year. CATL’s share is more than double that of second-place BYD.

It’s worth noting that CATL has maintained a global market share exceeding 30% for several consecutive quarters, making it the only manufacturer on the list to cross that threshold.

Following CATL, BYD ranked second with a battery installation volume of 89.9 GWh in the first half of the year, marking a remarkable 58.4% year-on-year growth. BYD’s global market share rose from 15.4% to 17.8%, securing its position as the world’s second-largest EV battery supplier.

The report also highlighted that BYD’s battery usage in the European market reached 6.0 GWh in Q1 2025, a surge of 313.4% year-on-year. This growth reflects not only the increasing overseas sales of BYD vehicles but also growing adoption of BYD battery systems by other automakers.
