Bulletproof, Fireproof, Even Tank-Proof? Geely’s Aegis Gold Brick Battery Pushes Safety to the Limit


With six rounds of extreme testing, Geely sent a clear message: meeting national standards isn’t enough—safety has to go “a step further.”

Battery safety has always been one of the biggest concerns for EV owners. On August 26, Geely showcased its in-house developed and manufactured Aegis Gold Brick Battery in a live broadcast, announcing that it had successfully passed the industry’s first “vehicle + pack” live-power six-stage extreme test, organized by the China Automotive Technology and Research Center (CATARC).

These tests simulated extreme conditions that could occur in daily driving, including: dynamic corrosion immersion under load, high-temperature charge and discharge, repeated underbody scraping, water immersion with scraping, bumpy water crossings, and external fire exposure while under load. Importantly, the same battery pack remained in active discharge throughout all tests, making the results closer to real-world usage. In the end, the Lynk & Co 10 EM-P equipped with the battery completed all tests and remained in normal working condition.

This wasn’t the Aegis Gold Brick Battery’s first brush with extremes. Previously, it had endured simultaneous eight-point nail penetration, direct bullet impact, multi-sided compression, and even the crushing weight of a 36-ton tank. The conclusion was consistent and reassuring: no smoke, no fire, no explosion.

From a technical perspective, the battery incorporates several new design ideas. For example, blending different particle materials improves thermal stability and cycle life; high-temperature insulation films inside the cells reduce risks from external shocks; and improved electrolytes make it easier for the battery to stay stable in harsh environments.

Performance hasn’t been compromised either. The hybrid version charges from 80% to 100% SOC in just 11.5 minutes, with an end-of-charge rate 75% higher than the industry average. Even at low state of charge, it maintains strong output, delivering up to 2100W of power per cell in five-second bursts. Its cycle life reaches 4,500 cycles—the equivalent of driving around the Earth 32 times.

Crucially, the Aegis Gold Brick Battery isn’t just a lab showcase. It has already been deployed in mass-production models from Zeekr, Lynk & Co, and Galaxy. From January to July this year, Geely’s NEV sales exceeded 850,000 units, doubling year-on-year—a surge in which battery safety and reliability have undoubtedly played a stabilizing role.

Looking at the bigger picture, concerns over EV battery safety have been around for more than a decade. From early incidents of spontaneous fires to today’s automakers proactively putting their batteries through extreme experiments, the shift is clear: safety isn’t just about meeting regulations anymore—it’s about covering as many real-world scenarios as possible.

At least based on the current results, Geely’s battery has shown it can remain stable under multiple extreme conditions. That not only boosts consumer confidence but may also help raise the bar for industry-wide safety standards.
