EV Market Insight: Model Y Leads $42K SUV Segment, Xiaomi YU7 Surges as Dark Horse

  • From January to August, the top three selling RMB 300,000 ($42,000) electric SUVs were the Tesla Model Y, NIO ES6, and Luxeed R7.
  • However, the rapid sales growth of the Xiaomi YU7 is poised to shake up this ranking.

The first eight months of 2025 indicate a subtle shift in the RMB 300,000 ($42,000) electric SUV segment in China.

According to retail data from the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA), the top three models in cumulative sales from January to August were the Tesla Model Y, NIO ES6, and Huawei-backed Luxeed R7, with sales reaching 241,670 units, 32,146 units, and 31,890 units, respectively.

A graphical representation showing the sales trends of RMB 300,000 electric SUVs in China from January to August 2025, highlighting the Tesla Model Y, NIO ES6, Luxeed R7, and Xiaomi YU7.
This analysis focuses on fully electric SUV models with manufacturer guide prices around RMB 300,000 or in the 300,000–400,000 RMB ($42,000–$56,200) range, with top trims not exceeding 400,000 RMB ($56,200). Data is based on the top ten retail sellers for the first eight months of 2025.

Despite a 16.5% year-on-year decline, the Tesla Model Y retains a commanding lead. The NIO ES6 and Luxeed R7 form a close second tier with relatively stable performance.

However, the monthly rankings reveal emerging challengers. The Xiaomi YU7, which began deliveries on July 6, has already accumulated 24,824 units sold, with 16,548 units delivered in August alone—a 173.9% month-on-month increase—propelling it to second place for the month and marking it as the standout “dark horse.”

Meanwhile, the NIO EC6 recorded 13,293 units, down 21% year-on-year, likely affected by the upcoming ES8 launch.

The Li Auto i8 has also made a strong debut. Deliveries began on August 20, and in less than two weeks, 2,212 units were sold, securing fourth place for the month.

Traditional luxury brands maintained relatively stable performances. The BMW iX1 sold 8,928 units cumulatively, up 35% year-on-year, with August deliveries of 1,033 units, a 17.1% increase.

Notably, although the iX1’s official guide price is around RMB 300,000 ($42,000), market prices have dropped to approximately RMB 150,000 ($21,000), indicating that much of the growth stems from deep discounts.

Other models, including the Audi Q4 e-tron, Hongqi Tiangong 08, and Smart #5, remain niche, with monthly sales hovering around the low hundreds.

Overall, Tesla Model Y continues to dominate the RMB 300,000 ($42,000) electric SUV segment, but the rapid sales ramp-up of the Xiaomi YU7 is applying significant pressure on the second tier.

If this delivery momentum persists, Xiaomi YU7 could surpass NIO ES6 in total annual sales, leaving next year’s rankings an open question.
