Leapmotor launched the Lafa5, a competitively priced electric hatchback targeting young consumers, emphasizing individuality and market expansion.
On the evening of November 27, Leapmotor officially launched the Lafa5, a model designed for the young and individuality-focused market.
As for pricing, Leapmotor delivered an unexpected surprise. The official MSRP for the Lafa5 starts at RMB 97,800 ($13,810), met with enthusiastic applause at the venue.
Specifically, the SKU lineup remains consistent with the presale launch, offering two range variants—515 km and 605 km—and five SKUs in total:
515 Plus: RMB 97,800 ($13,810)
515 Pro: RMB 105,800 ($14,940)
515 Max: RMB 115,800 ($16,350)
605 Pro: RMB 111,800 ($15,790)
605 Max: RMB 121,800 ($17,200)

And the surprise continued. Coinciding with Thanksgiving, the Lafa5 is offered with a limited-time RMB 5,000 ($706) launch discount, along with free limited-time color options and lifetime warranties covering the vehicle, power electronics, and several core components—further enhancing its value advantage.
Beyond pricing, the launch event largely echoed the earlier presale presentation. Let’s briefly revisit the product itself.
Lafa5 targets young, premium-oriented individuality seekers, positioned distinctly relative to the brand’s four main series—”ABCD”—yet remains unmistakably Leapmotor in character.

For example, within a RMB 120,000 ($16,940) budget, buyers get a Qualcomm 8650 + 8295P dual-cockpit chipset and 27 smart perception sensors including a lidar unit.
It also features standard 19-inch sport wheels, more than 80% soft-touch cabin coverage, faux suede and Nappa genuine leather surfaces (5.54 m²), and what Leapmotor claims is the longest range in its class—605 km.

This combination continues Leapmotor’s “great cars at fair prices” approach aligned with mainstream mass-market logic.
What feels less traditionally Leapmotor, however, is that the Lafa5 offers 50:50 weight distribution, short overhangs with a wide-body coupe-hatch profile, a high-performance rear motor delivering up to 160 kW, and a chassis tuned by the Stellantis team.
All of this lays the foundation for the Lafa5’s handling performance.
The regret of the evening was the Ultra version, which remained only in PPT slides with no price disclosed. All that Leapmotor senior VP Cao Li offered was: “progressing steadily” and “see you next year.”

Turning to the broader market environment: entering 2025, three-row SUVs have become the industry’s major focus segment.
Choosing to release a compact “electric hot hatch” at this timing may seem counterintuitive.
Following the launch, ChinaEV Home attended a group media Q&A session with Cao Li, Chairman Zhu Jiangming, and COO Zhou Ying to explore the company’s expectations for Lafa5 and whether the model could bridge Leapmotor’s expansion to global markets. Here’s what we learned.
Individuality ≠ niche
Speaking of the Lafa5 inevitably recalls Leapmotor’s first production vehicle—the S01.
The S01 was a disappointment for the company: launched in 2019 and discontinued in 2022, with cumulative sales below 3,000 units.
Three years later, Leapmotor again steps outside family vehicles (the ABCD lineup) to build a young, individuality-oriented product—raising curiosity about the motivations and internal expectations behind the decision.
Chairman Zhu Jiangming believes the failure of the S01, “even if unfortunate, was ultimately valuable.” It made Leapmotor aware of the importance of product planning, definition, and rollout timing.

For this “restart,” Zhu expresses strong confidence in the Lafa5.
“Every product we launched since last year has sold over 10,000 units. Not a single one has fallen below that mark. With today’s Lafa5—its design, configuration, and pricing strategy—I believe this car will definitely succeed.”
He quietly revealed during the interview that within 30 minutes of opening orders, the Lafa5 gained around 3,000 incremental orders. We’ll wait for the official numbers.
Yet Leapmotor does not seem in a hurry to scale individuality-focused models. Cao Li described the Lafa5 as “an experiment,” adding, “if it performs well, we may launch a series of similar products.”

Many assume sporty individuality models attract a small audience and are therefore labeled “niche.”
But Zhu argues that as automotive consumption becomes younger and competition intensifies, Leapmotor hopes to escape homogenization by building vehicles for personal expression.
With “self-pleasing consumption” rising, demand for individuality is significant.
A PPT during the launch revealed that among Lafa5 reservation holders, more than 60% are ages 25–35, including 40% who are single or dating and 30% who represent young families of three.

In other words, Leapmotor hopes to break the “individuality equals niche” stereotype and turn the Lafa5 into a mass-market success.
Zhu points out that individuality and practicality can coexist. For example, the Lafa5 includes frameless doors and Nappa leather steering wheel and seats—premium touches that reinforce product strength.
Simply put, the idea of “great cars aren’t expensive” still applies, enabling a sporty hatchback to become a mainstream choice.
Still, pricing pressure is intense. Zhu emphasized the model’s high costs and the difficulty of pricing, but ultimately chose to bring “extra sincerity beyond cost-based pricing.”
Interior view of Lafa 5
Looking beyond domestic expectations, the Lafa5 is also a globally oriented hatchback.
During the presale Q&A, Cao Li stressed that Lafa5 was not developed as a “native” model for European markets—its core volume will remain in China.
But since Leapmotor is expanding globally, whether Lafa5 can unlock overseas growth became a major discussion topic.
1 million-unit sales goal
Ahead of Auto Guangzhou, Leapmotor announced that its 2025 cumulative sales had surpassed 500,000 units, reaching the annual target early.
The achievement raises interest in the brand’s 2026 target and overseas expansion trajectory.
Leapmotor has repeatedly said that once the ABCD lineup is complete, the company will be capable of pursuing 1 million annual sales.
Now that all four series are in place—and with the Lafa5 launch—Leapmotor stated that its 2026 sales target is 1 million units.

So how much will ABCD contribute? And how much will Lafa5 contribute? Zhu ran through the math.
He said: “The B and C series plus the T03 this year are close to 600,000 units. Beyond expanding B and C volume, the remaining 300,000–400,000 units will come from A and D series.”
No specific target was given for Lafa5. Zhu only noted: “We hope every model achieves monthly sales of over 10,000.”
Sporty hatchbacks are a popular segment in overseas markets, especially in European motorsport culture.

However, the influence of a performance hatch cannot rely solely on specs—it benefits significantly from track credentials.
Cao said Leapmotor is evaluating the idea:
“When we run extreme tests, they’re on race tracks. Whether we create a racing version to compete in rally or similar formats is still under discussion; we are exploring whether Lafa5 has that potential.”

Beyond selling more and selling better—Leapmotor’s established playbook—the company also appears intent on creating a globally recognizable performance identity.
Though born for China, the Lafa5 marks an important step in Leapmotor’s global strategy.
So, is the Lafa5 compelling in value? And will it become another 10,000-unit-per-month hit for Leapmotor?
