CATL’s marine battery system has now obtained approvals from five major global classification societies.
Recently, at the international maritime exhibition held in Shanghai, CATL’s independently developed marine battery system successfully obtained the Type Approval Certificate issued by the Italian classification society (RINA).
This marks another recognition from an internationally authoritative maritime institution for CATL, following its previous certifications from major global classification societies such as France, the United States, and Norway.
To date, CATL has delivered products for nearly 900 vessels, covering various ship types including inland river cruise ships, offshore passenger ships, hybrid-powered tugboats, and pure-electric cargo ships.
CATL’s electrification strategy in the maritime sector dates back to 2019, when the company first listed electric vessels as an important application scenario for power batteries in its performance report.
In 2020, its electric vessel products took the lead in obtaining certification under the new standards of the China Classification Society (CCS). The “Yangtze River Three Gorges 1,” equipped with CATL batteries, became the world’s largest pure-electric cruise ship in terms of battery capacity.
In 2022, CATL officially established its Electric Ship Technology Co., Ltd., dedicated to advancing marine battery products and electric vessel operations. In July 2024, Bureau Veritas (BV) issued CATL its first Type Approval Certificate from a foreign classification society, marking the beginning of its international certification journey.
According to official statements, CATL has achieved multiple industry-leading milestones:
- The “Yangtze River Three Gorges 1,” the world’s largest pure-electric inland river cruise ship in terms of battery capacity.
- The “Yujian 77,” the nation’s first pure-electric offshore passenger ship classed by the China Classification Society.
- The “Qinggang Tug 1,” the nation’s first hybrid-powered tugboat.
- The “Jining 6006,” the first pure-electric battery-swapping cargo ship on the Beijing-Hangzhou Canal.

CATL’s plan to enable pure-electric vessels to sail into the open sea within the next three years is steadily advancing.
With the acquisition of the RINA certification, CATL’s marine battery system has now obtained approvals from five major global classification societies.
