Smart #2 Two-Door EV Begins Road Tests, Global Launch Scheduled for Late 2026

On December 15, Smart announced that its all-new electric two-door vehicle, the smart #2, has officially begun global road testing, with a global debut scheduled for the end of 2026.

As early as September this year, Smart China revealed plans to launch the smart #2 in China, Europe, and other international markets.

As a key part of the Smart brand’s comeback, the smart #2 continues the classic A00-level body size while introducing a new electric technology architecture and modern design.

As Smart officials revealed to ChinaEV Home, the spy shots primarily test the new platform, with the body still based on the previous fortwo version.

In terms of exterior and interior design, the smart #2 will present a completely new, modern style, with significant differences compared to the previous fortwo.

While retaining the iconic A00 classic small car size, the smart #2 will also maintain the fortwo’s dual-door, two-seat layout, rear-wheel-drive dynamics, and four-wheel, four-corner classic stance as part of its core genes.

The smart #2 is built on the new ECA architecture, developed with Mercedes-Benz’s design team. The new ECA platform provides a foundation for the next-generation electric drive system, supporting advanced safety technologies and an efficient urban driving experience.

Currently, the testing is mainly focused on structural strength, crash safety, battery performance, thermal control systems, and suspension durability. These are critical steps for the vehicle to enter the next phase of testing and ultimately reach mass production.

The return of the smart #2 comes as the A00-level electric car market is becoming increasingly competitive, particularly in China.

According to the latest sales data, the top three new energy micro cars in November were the Wuling Hongguang MINI EV, Geely’s Panda, and FAW’s Bestune Pony, with sales of 56,756, 17,301, and 12,905 units, respectively. The prices of these vehicles are mostly around 50,000 RMB ($7,000) or even lower.

To remain competitive, the smart #2’s pricing is expected to be around 100,000 RMB ($14,000), but even at that price, it may still be considered high for the A00 market, unless smart #2 offers a surprisingly attractive price.

Currently, the overall performance of the Smart brand in terms of sales is not particularly strong. In October, Smart’s sales were 2,228 units, down 42.31% year-on-year.

From January to October this year, Smart’s cumulative deliveries totaled 24,622 units, a 2.34% year-on-year decline.
