MIIT clarifies mechanical door‑opening requirements and validation procedures for vehicle door handles in crash scenarios.
China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), together with other authorities, has recently released the Safety Technical Requirements for Vehicle Door Handles, which has entered the approval stage as a mandatory national (GB) standard.

The standard, for the first time, classifies door handles as an independent safety item within the mandatory framework. It targets the real‑world usability of increasingly common hidden, electrically deployable, and button‑type door handles under extreme conditions such as crashes and power loss.
Applicable to M1 and N1 passenger vehicles and multipurpose vehicles, the standard establishes a comprehensive set of requirements covering structure, recognizability, operating force, mechanical redundancy, and validation methods.
Notably, it specifies that each door must be equipped with a mechanically releasable exterior handle and at least one mechanically releasable interior handle. Following severe incidents—including airbag deployment, battery thermal events, or complete vehicle power loss—the door must remain openable from inside and/or outside without the use of tools.

Moving beyond the previously vague notion of “openability,” the standard introduces a clear operability verification regime. During testing, low‑voltage power is cut 70 ms ± 5 ms after crash triggering, with mechanical door release then assessed at the 1‑minute and 5‑minute marks.
To prevent designs that meet form but fail in function, the standard also sets explicit operating‑force thresholds: ≥500 N for exterior handles, ≥200 N for interior handles, and ≥50 N for button‑type interior handles. After testing, the handle must remain structurally intact and fully functional.
From a human‑factors perspective, the standard imposes additional mandatory requirements. Where an interior handle is not inherently intuitive, it must feature permanent identification, be clearly visible at night, and be accompanied by easily understandable graphical or textual instructions, enabling occupants or rescuers to quickly determine the correct opening method.

Under the proposed timeline, the standard is scheduled to take effect on January 1, 2027. For newly type‑approved models, most provisions apply immediately upon implementation, with a 12‑month grace period granted only for the requirement on exterior‑handle operating space. Existing approved models are given a transition period of up to 24 months.
For the industry, this is a technically detailed regulation with a clear supervisory intent. Door handles—long treated primarily as elements of aerodynamics, styling, or cockpit interaction—are now positioned as critical physical interfaces within the vehicle’s crash‑response chain, requiring systematic consideration from platform engineering through to final production design.
