Due to Software Defects, NIO Recalls 246,229 ES8/ES6/EC6 Vehicles

As of January 31, 2026, NIO has cumulatively delivered 1,024,774 new vehicles and provided over 100 million battery swap services.

On February 9, NIO filed a recall plan with the State Administration for Market Regulation.

Effective immediately, the recall involves pure electric vehicles models ES8, ES6, and EC6 manufactured between March 16, 2018, and January 16, 2023, totaling 246,229 units.

This marks the largest recall in NIO’s history, affecting three main models built on its first-generation NT1.0 platform, accounting for approximately 85% of its total deliveries from 2018 to 2022.

NIO stated that some vehicles within the recall scope may experience temporary black screens on the instrument cluster and central control display under specific conditions due to a software issue. During such an event, essential vehicle information and functions (such as speed, fault warnings, defrosting, and defogging) may become unavailable to the driver, posing a potential safety risk.

For the recalled vehicles, NIO will provide free remote over-the-air (OTA) software updates to upgrade the system to Aspen 3.5.6, Alder 2.1.0, or later versions. For vehicles that cannot be upgraded via OTA technology, NIO Service Centers will contact the affected users to carry out the recall and eliminate the safety hazard.

It is worth noting that this recall comes at a critical moment as NIO achieves a milestone in reaching phased profitability.

Just on February 5, NIO announced its first-ever quarterly adjusted operating profit in the fourth quarter of 2025 since its founding, with an estimated adjusted operating profit between 700 million and 1.2 billion yuan. As of January 31, 2026, NIO has cumulatively delivered 1,024,774 new vehicles and provided over 100 million battery swap services.
