Takeaways
  • UK BEV registrations hit 64,440 in June, up 38% year‑on‑year and rising to a 30% market share.
  • Electrified vehicles made up 73% of June registrations, pushing petrol and diesel into steep decline.
  • Chinese brands accelerated gains: MG, BYD, Chery/Jaecoo, and Leapmotor sharply expanded UK volumes and share.

According to data from UK new energy vehicle research firm New Automotive, total passenger vehicle registrations in the UK reached 215,921 units in June 2026, up 14.9% year-on-year and 34.4% month-on-month.

The market’s rebound was partly seasonal, but the structural driver was clear: electrified vehicles accounted for the bulk of growth.

Battery electric vehicle (BEV) registrations reached 64,440 units, up 38% year-on-year, lifting market share to 30%, an increase from May.

When including plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) and conventional hybrids (HEVs), electrified vehicles accounted for 73% of total registrations, remaining above the 50% threshold for the fourth consecutive month.

In contrast, internal combustion vehicles continued to lose ground.

Petrol registrations fell 8.5%, while diesel dropped 17.4%, highlighting continued displacement by electrified powertrains even as overall market volume expands.

The acceleration in EV demand has also created additional room for Chinese automakers in the UK market.

MG remained the leading Chinese brand in the country. It recorded 12,761 registrations in June, up 57% year-on-year.

BYD registered 6,258 vehicles in June, up 26.5% year-on-year, including 3,001 BEVs and 3,257 PHEVs.

The company ranked second in the BEV segment, while maintaining a dual-track structure of battery electric and plug-in hybrid models.

Its growth profile is becoming more balanced as its model lineup expands in the UK.

Leapmotor was one of the fastest-growing brands in the month, with registrations reaching 3,862 units, up 460% year-on-year, supported by its distribution partnership with Stellantis.

Tesla registered 12,437 units in the UK in June, up 42.4% year-on-year, capturing close to 20% of the BEV market.

The company widened its lead over BYD in the pure electric segment during the month.

Among legacy automakers, Volkswagen remained the largest single automotive group in the UK with 16,396 registrations, though down 10% year-on-year.

Audi recorded 11,498 units, up 8.3%, showing moderate growth within the premium segment.
