China H1 Passenger Car Sales Hit 8.7M, SUVs Tighten Grip with 54.8% Share

Takeaways
  • China H1 passenger car retail sales plunged 23% YoY while wholesale deliveries fell 6%, signaling weak domestic consumption.
  • SUVs dominated with a 54.8% share, led by BYD Song and surging A0–B segments driven by new-energy models.
  • Electrification and exports are the industry's growth engines as entry-level gasoline cars collapse.

China Passenger Car Association (CPCA) Secretary General Cui Dongshu released June 2026 passenger vehicle segment data. The market is increasingly driven by structural shifts rather than overall volume.

Passenger car retail sales fell 23% year-on-year in June. Wholesale deliveries declined 6%. Retail demand remained weaker than factory shipments. This highlights a continued divergence between soft domestic consumption and resilient overseas demand.

At the segment level, China’s entry-level mini car market continued to contract. The A00-class sedan segment kept shrinking during the first half, with sales becoming increasingly concentrated among a handful of models.

BYD Seagull led by a wide margin after selling 163.2K units in H1. Wuling Hongguang MINI, once the category leader, delivered 69.9K units, down 64% year-on-year. Chery QQ3 ranked third with cumulative sales of 37.3K units.

The A0-class sedan segment remained one of the few entry-level categories to post growth during the first six months. Electrified models have become the dominant choice in the price band, while gasoline-powered cars continued to lose relevance.

Geely Xingyuan topped the category in June with 50.9K units. H1 sales reached 249.4K units, up 21% from a year earlier, giving it a commanding lead.

BYD Dolphin ranked second with 25.5K units. It was followed closely by the SAIC MG4 series with 25K units and Wuling Bingo with 24.2K units.

SUVs remained the backbone of China’s passenger vehicle market. A-class SUVs continued to serve as the core family vehicle segment, showing strong resilience during the second quarter while remaining the industry’s largest category.

BYD Song led the segment by a substantial margin after delivering 365.7K units during the first half. Chery Tiggo 7 ranked second with 167.7K units, narrowly ahead of Chery Explore 06 at 167.5K units.

The A0-class SUV segment also posted one of the strongest recoveries. Sales have rebounded steadily since February, making it the fastest-growing SUV category this year.

BYD Yuan Up climbed rapidly to become the segment leader in June. Geely Coolray maintained its long-standing position among the top sellers. Leapmotor A10, Nevo Q05, and Jaecoo J5 rapidly gained share, intensifying competition.

Growth was even stronger in the B-class SUV segment, where new-energy models continued to outpace traditional gasoline vehicles. Tesla Model Y remained the clear leader with 299.5K units sold during H1.

Li Auto i6, Xiaomi YU7, and Fangchengbao Tai 7 formed the leading domestic trio, each maintaining strong growth momentum throughout the year. In June alone, Tai 7 sold 23.7K units. Li Auto i6 delivered 21.5K units. Xiaomi YU7 recorded 14.3K units.

The sedan market showed polarized performance. A-class sedans remained under pressure after a weak start to the year. Sales recovered modestly during the second quarter, though competition largely centered on replacing existing demand rather than creating new volume.

BYD Seal 06 ranked first with 99.2K units sold during H1. Volkswagen Lavida followed with 94.1K units. Geely Emgrand EC7 came third with 91.5K units.

Conventional gasoline models and hybrid vehicles continued to underpin the segment, though most mainstream nameplates recorded year-on-year declines. Growth became highly uneven, with only a limited number of models posting monthly gains while several mainstream gasoline and new-energy vehicles fell more than 40%.

The B-class sedan segment continued to shift toward electrification while joint-venture gasoline models lost ground. Tesla Model 3 remained the segment leader after selling 168.4K units during the first half.

Toyota Camry ranked second with 85.6K units. Xiaomi SU7 followed with 80.5K units.

The joint-venture gasoline lineup continued to weaken. Volkswagen Magotan and Passat both recorded year-on-year declines exceeding 30% in June as new-energy products steadily eroded the traditional midsize sedan market.

Performance within the segment diverged sharply. SAIC Z7 posted month-on-month growth of more than 110%, supported by its intelligent driving package. Xiaomi SU7, by contrast, saw H1 sales fall 48% from a year earlier following a high comparison base.

Competition also intensified in the MPV market, where overall growth remained subdued. Wuling Xingguang ranked first with cumulative H1 sales of 42.6K units. Toyota Sienna followed with 38.3K units. Buick GL8 came third with 34.9K units.

Sienna sales jumped 128% month-on-month in June, marking a strong short-term rebound. GAC Trumpchi GM8 and Voyah Dreame maintained year-on-year growth. Buick GL8 and Denza D9 both recorded substantial declines over the first half.

Growth varied widely across models. Wey Gaoshan surged 267% during H1. Luxeed V9 jumped 197% month-on-month in June as new hybrid MPVs gained traction through larger cabins and smarter features.

Overall, June’s improvement reflected a structural recovery rather than a broad market rebound. Weak consumer spending continued to weigh most heavily on low-priced entry-level vehicles, while premium new-energy models demonstrated stronger demand resilience.

Exports remain the industry’s primary long-term growth engine. Electrification and overseas expansion continue to reshape China’s passenger vehicle market.
