- BEV market share hit 38% in August as electric registrations surged 113% year‑on‑year.

According to data from the French Automotive Manufacturers Committee (CCFA), passenger-car registrations in France reached 94,351 units in August 2026, up 7.4% YoY.
Cumulative registrations for the first eight months reached 1,078,325 units, up 3% YoY, indicating that the overall market continued to post moderate growth.
By powertrain, France’s new-car market continued to accelerate its shift toward electrification.
BEV registrations reached 36,159 units in August, lifting their market share to 38%, up 3 percentage points from the 35% recorded in July and more than doubling year on year with growth of 113%.
In the first eight months of the year, cumulative BEV registrations reached 322,097 units, up 74% YoY, giving battery-electric vehicles a 30% share of the French market.

By comparison, hybrid vehicles accounted for a combined 45% of the market in August, with 42,112 registrations, down 8% YoY.
The share of conventional internal-combustion vehicles fell further to 14%.
Amid this round of growth, Chinese‑brand vehicles recorded 7,070 registrations in France in August, capturing a 7.5 % market share.
BYD remained the Chinese automaker with the highest registration volume in France.
The company registered 2,195 vehicles in August, up 64% YoY, bringing its cumulative registrations for the first eight months to 18,695 units, up 140.2%.

SAIC Motor’s MG, meanwhile, has maintained a relatively large sales base in Europe, supported by the distribution network it established through its earlier entry into the market.
MG registered 2,003 vehicles in France in August, up 23.1% YoY, making it, alongside BYD, one of only two Chinese brands to exceed 2,000 registrations during the month.
Its cumulative registrations for the year reached 21,763 units, up 27.2% YoY.
Chery’s Jaecoo has also gained traction quickly since entering the French market in April.
The brand registered 1,987 vehicles in August, taking its cumulative registrations since the beginning of the year to 7,043 units.
Other Chinese brands are also entering a stronger growth phase. Leapmotor registered 655 vehicles in France in August, up 221.1% YoY, while XPeng registrations rose 268.9% to 546 units.
On 18 Aug, XPeng Motors reported cumulative deliveries of 6,000 units in France, with the Xpeng P7+ being the delivered model.

French automakers, by contrast, continued to maintain a clear advantage in absolute sales volumes, although growth at some brands lagged behind the overall market.
Renault remained the best-selling brand in France, with 13,128 registrations in August, up just 0.2% YoY. Peugeot followed with 11,716 vehicles, down 0.3% YoY.
Traditional premium brands performed more weakly. BMW and Audi registrations in France fell 9.8% and 22.3% YoY, respectively, in August.
Tesla, meanwhile, staged a sharp rebound, with 5,038 registrations in France in August, up 278.5% YoY.
The Model Y accounted for 4,622 of those registrations, making it France’s best-selling BEV model for the month.
