Will XPeng’s ‘Super Electric’ Be a Major Player in the Next Era of Hybrids?
On September 9, XPeng Motors’ first extended-range model—the XPeng X9 EREV—officially completed its application and was listed in the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) announcement.
Data shows that the XPeng X9 EREV will be equipped with a 63.3 kWh battery pack, offering a pure electric range of over 450 km under CLTC conditions and a comprehensive range exceeding 1,600 km.
This pure electric range far surpasses that of major competitors such as the Denza D9 DM-i (up to 200 km) and the Voyah Dreamer PHEV (up to 236 km).
Based on the information disclosed in the MIIT announcement for the XPeng X9 EREV, let’s review the basic parameters of this model.
The XPeng X9 EREV measures 5316*1988*1785 mm in length, width, and height, with a wheelbase of 3160 mm. The length has increased by 23 mm compared to the pure electric version. It is positioned as a seven-seater mid-to-large-size MPV with a curb weight of 2750 kg.
The new model retains the “Starship aesthetics” design of the pure electric version. The most noticeable change in the X9 EREV is at the front, where the previous honeycomb-style panel has been replaced by a horizontal active grille. The rear bumper has also been slightly simplified.
In terms of power, the X9 EREV uses a 1.5T range extender supplied by Dong’an Power, with a maximum power output of 110 kW. It is equipped with a single electric motor delivering 210 kW and paired with an LFP battery pack that balances cost and safety.
From its basic configuration, it is evident that XPeng Motors remains committed to its technical philosophy: even if users choose an extended-range model, the pure electric refueling experience should not be compromised. According to official sources, the new model will feature an 800V high-voltage platform supporting 5C ultra-fast charging.
Just yesterday, CNEVHome interviewed XPeng Motors CEO He Xiaopeng at the Munich Motor Show and asked a key question: What is the core selling point of the XPeng X9 EREV?
He Xiaopeng stated: The XPeng X9 will offer dual powertrains—one pure electric and the other “Super Electric.” In the future, nearly every XPeng model will come with two powertrain options. In the past, the biggest issue with extended-range models was the lack of electric advantages. However, today’s “Super Electric” offers long range, fast charging, no noise, and addresses all the problems of hybrid systems. This will make it a strong competitor in the next era of hybrid vehicles.
According to the plan, XPeng Motors currently has at least five extended-range models in the pipeline, including sedans and SUVs. In the future, the vast majority of new models will adopt both extended-range and pure electric powertrain options.
According to XPeng, to ensure product reliability and performance, the company has deployed over 1,000 test vehicles, conducting comprehensive validation across more than 330 cities in 20 countries over 800 days. The cumulative test distance has exceeded 20 million kilometers.
No official information has been released regarding the price of the new model. For reference, the pure electric version of the XPeng X9 is priced between ¥359,800 and ¥419,800. If the extended-range version is priced below ¥300,000, it will be highly competitive.
