The launch of the new model marks smart’s official transition from a pure electric brand to a new phase of parallel development, adopting a dual-technology strategy of “pure electric + hybrid”.
On September 28, smart launched pre-sales for its first plug-in hybrid model — the all-new smart #5 EHD Super Hybrid. Pre-sales start at RMB 189,900 ($26,674).
The all-new smart #5 EHD measures 4705/1920/1705 mm with a wheelbase of 2900 mm, making this midsize SUV larger than the Mercedes-Benz GLB.

In terms of exterior design, the new model continues the brand’s signature circular elements and boxy styling. The front features a closed grille and “Time Capsule”-inspired full-width LED matrix headlights, which create distinctive brand recognition when illuminated. The sculpted front bumper enhances three-dimensional presence, balancing urban SUV aesthetics with a touch of light off-road character.

The interior, designed by the Mercedes-Benz Global Design Team, adopts a triple-screen layout featuring an OLED 2.5K dual screen and a 10.3-inch digital instrument cluster. A key highlight is the AMD V2000 in-vehicle chip, making it the first mass-produced vehicle equipped with the Doubao AI large model — optimizing voice interaction and multi-modal control experiences.
The core technological highlight of the all-new smart #5 EHD is its EHD Super Hybrid System. Comprising a 1.5T dedicated hybrid engine and a drive motor, the engine delivers a maximum power of 120 kW, while the motor outputs 200 kW. Paired with a 3-speed DHT dedicated hybrid transmission, the system efficiently allocates power across three scenarios: low-speed pure electric driving, high-speed cruising, and dynamic acceleration.
Additionally, equipped with a 41.46 kWh battery pack, the vehicle achieves a 252 km all-electric range under CLTC conditions and a comprehensive range exceeding 1600 km.

The launch of the all-new smart #5 EHD marks smart’s official transition from a pure electric brand to a dual-technology strategy of “pure electric + hybrid”. Priced complementarily with the pure electric version starting at RMB 239,900, the model aims to cover both the RMB 200,000–300,000 premium hybrid and pure electric segments, tasked with driving volume sales and expanding market reach.
Facing competition from mainstream plug-in hybrid SUVs like the BYD Song Plus DM-i and Galaxy L7, the all-new smart #5 EHD emphasizes higher thermal efficiency and Mercedes-Benz design prestige to differentiate itself. Whether the new model can become a fresh growth driver for smart’s sales in China remains to be seen.
