In Hongkong’s EV brand ranking in Sept., BYD led with 920 units, followed by Tesla (853), Zeekr (546), GAC Aion (246), BMW (146), and XPeng (120).
According to the latest data released by Hong Kong’s Transport Department, BYD registered 920 new vehicles in September, accounting for 23.16% of the city’s EV market and overtaking Tesla to become Hong Kong’s best-selling electric vehicle brand.
Electric vehicles have now taken a dominant position in Hong Kong’s private car market. In September, 3,542 new EVs were registered, making up nearly 76% of all new private car registrations.
Compared with the 1,818 EVs registered in the same month of 2024, the figure represents an increase of about 95%.

By contrast, new registrations of gasoline vehicles totaled just 1,136 units in September—up by only 14 units year on year—showing the near stagnation of the internal combustion engine vehicle market.
By brand, Tesla ranked second with 853 vehicles, marking a 13% month-on-month decline. Geely’s Zeekr jumped to third place with 546 registrations, more than seven times higher than the previous month.
GAC Aion, BMW, and XPeng followed with 246, 146, and 120 vehicles, respectively.

Among BYD’s top-performing models, the Atto 2—a compact all-electric SUV launched in Hong Kong in August (sold in mainland China as Yuan PLUS)—was the key growth driver, with 635 units registered in a single month. The model’s post-subsidy starting price is about HK$155,000 ($19,800).
Since the release of Hong Kong’s “Roadmap on Popularisation of Electric Vehicles” in 2021, the government has continued to promote the transition from gasoline to electric vehicles, targeting a complete halt to new registrations of gasoline and hybrid private cars by 2035 or earlier.

Data from the Environmental Protection Department show that as of the end of August 2025, Hong Kong’s EV population stood at around 131,700 units, representing a market penetration rate of 14.6%.
Public charging infrastructure has also been expanding rapidly, with approximately 15,500 public charging points across the city as of the end of September—significantly higher than in previous years.
Meanwhile, BYD’s export performance also remained strong. In September, the company exported 71,256 vehicles, including 70,851 passenger cars and pickups, marking a 107% year-on-year surge in overseas sales.
