Currently, Geely’s Galaxy lineup has a combined annual capacity of nearly 1 million units across its domestic factories.
Geely is reportedly set to repurpose the former SAIC-GM Beisheng Phase III plant in Shenyang to expand production capacity for its Galaxy lineup, according to sources cited by LatePost Auto on November 3.
A person close to Geely said discussions “have been ongoing for some time, and Galaxy’s capacity is indeed tight.” Another insider revealed that Geely had previously approached a joint venture automaker to lease its Shenyang facility but the talks fell through.
The Beisheng plant was once a key production base for SAIC-GM in China, building fuel-powered models such as the Buick GL8 and Envision, with a designed annual capacity exceeding 300,000 units.

The plant was constructed in three phases, with the Phase III facility — also known as the Beisheng plant — completed in 2014. SAIC-GM officially shut down the site in February this year.
According to a September notice from the Liaoning Provincial Auction House, the Phase III plant is currently undergoing renovation. In May, a newly established company, Shenyang Jichi Auto, won the bid to carry out the refurbishment with an investment of RMB 890 million ($125 million).
Geely’s total domestic production capacity exceeds 3 million vehicles, more than half of which is dedicated to new energy models.

The Galaxy lineup alone accounts for nearly 1 million units of annual capacity across various factories, though none are exclusively dedicated to Galaxy production and must share lines with other models.
As new Galaxy models are rolled out in quick succession, capacity constraints have become increasingly apparent.
For instance, the Baoji base, with an annual capacity of 200,000 units, produces both the Galaxy L7 and Boyue L on shared lines.

The Xiangtan base, responsible for the popular Xingyuan model, recently upgraded its annual capacity from 300,000 to 500,000 units. Despite ongoing expansion, Geely is still struggling to meet surging market demand.
In October, Galaxy sales hit a record 127,000 units, up 101% year-on-year, achieving the 1-million-unit annual sales target ahead of schedule.

The Galaxy’s strong performance has driven Geely’s overall sales higher, prompting the company to revise its full-year target upward multiple times from 1.65 million to 3 million vehicles.
Beyond China, Geely’s new energy exports have also surged, jumping 214% year-on-year in the first nine months of 2025. Sales in Europe rose 61.8%, while the Latin American market climbed 93.4%.
As Geely accelerates its global expansion, executives have emphasized that production layout must align with localized supply chains.
In the first half of 2025, Geely and Renault entered into a global cooperation agreement covering capacity sharing and international production coordination.
According to a new announcement released today, Geely and Renault have reached a strategic partnership in Brazil under which Renault’s local plant will manufacture Geely-branded vehicles.
The move underscores Geely’s multi-pronged approach to easing production bottlenecks while advancing its global footprint.
