BYD Expands PHEV Lineup in Japan Amid Subsidy Disadvantage

BYD plans to introduce the Seal 6 wagon and the compact SUV Atto 2 in Japan during 2026, further expanding its PHEV portfolio.

BYD is adjusting its Japan strategy by expanding its plug-in hybrid (PHEV) lineup to mitigate the impact of changes in local new-energy vehicle subsidy policies, according to Nikkei Asia, reported on Feb. 10.

Atsuki Tofukuji, president of BYD Auto Japan, said the subsidy rule revisions have placed the company “at a significant disadvantage.”

During tariff negotiations with the Trump administration, Japan agreed to make U.S.-built EVs more eligible for subsidies.

Since January, the Japanese government has raised the maximum subsidy for certain vehicles by JPY 400,000 ($2,580).

The increase is calculated based on previously granted subsidy levels. Vehicles from Toyota and Tesla qualified for the full JPY 400,000 ($2,580) increase, pushing total subsidies to more than JPY 1,000,000 ($6,450).

However, BYD models previously received only JPY 350,000 ($2,260) in subsidies, and that amount has remained unchanged under the revised framework.

The subsidy gap has directly reshaped retail pricing. In the electric SUV segment, the effective transaction price of Toyota’s bZ4X has dropped below that of BYD’s Atto 3.

At the same time, the new Nissan Leaf and Suzuki’s first EV, the e Vitara, have launched with strong subsidy support, increasing competitive pressure on BYD’s price-driven pure-electric offerings.

Against this backdrop, BYD is turning to plug-in hybrids. In January, the Sealion 6 plug-in hybrid SUV began deliveries in Japan, and the model is currently BYD’s best-selling PHEV globally.

With three PHEV models and the kei-car Racco scheduled for launch this summer, BYD’s lineup in Japan will reach eight models, covering most segments except light commercial vehicles.

Among imported brands, its product range is expected to rank among the most comprehensive.
