BYD Reportedly Ends L-Series Production in China, Eyes Overseas Continuation

Takeaways
  • BYD has stopped production of multiple L-series models in China as it phases the Qin L, Song L, Han L and Tang L out domestically.
  • BYD plans to replace L-series with larger, higher-tech models like Qin MAX, Song Ultra and Datang featuring Blade Batteries and high-voltage platforms.
  • L-series models are likely to continue abroad under new names, while domestic owners keep warranties, parts and OTA support.

According to a Chinese media report, BYD has halted production of the Qin L and Song L, following the earlier discontinuation of the Han L and Tang L, with the L-series lineup expected to gradually exit the Chinese domestic market.

In response to the reports, BYD’s online customer service confirmed that some Qin L variants have indeed stopped production, although certain versions remain available for purchase.

The company has not provided a clear response regarding whether Song L production has been discontinued.

The adjustment of the L-series lineup did not come unexpectedly. Previous reports indicated that both the Han L and Tang L had already begun winding down domestic production.

Among them, the Tang L remained on the market for only around one year before production was reportedly halted. Its monthly sales declined from 12,700 units in June 2025 to 616 units in May 2026.

The production changes appear to be part of BYD’s broader product renewal strategy.

As higher-positioned models equipped with newer technologies enter the market, existing models are gradually being replaced in terms of product positioning.

Future replacements for the L-series are expected to include Ultra, Max and a new generation of larger-sized models, including the Qin MAX, Song Ultra and Datang.

These upcoming vehicles will feature larger dimensions, next-generation Blade Batteries, high-voltage platforms and upgraded intelligent driving assistance systems.

BYD Datang EV

For example, the Datang measures 5,263 mm in length with a 3,130 mm wheelbase, offering up to 950 km of pure electric range.

It is priced only around RMB 10,000 ($1,470) to RMB 35,000 ($5,150) higher than the Tang L.

It is worth noting that the L-series is unlikely to disappear completely and may continue serving overseas markets.

Previously, the Tang L entered the Mexican market under the name Atto 8, offered exclusively with a DM-p all-wheel-drive plug-in hybrid system, priced at 1.1998 million Mexican pesos, nearly twice its domestic price.

Industry observers expect similar arrangements for the Qin L and Song L, with the models potentially receiving new names for overseas expansion.

For existing owners, the product transition will not affect after-sales support.

BYD will continue providing vehicle warranties, lifetime warranties for core electric components, and spare parts supply for vehicles already sold.

The Han L and Tang L have also continued receiving over-the-air (OTA) updates, including improvements to intelligent driving assistance and infotainment functions, meaning their product support cycle remains ongoing.

From a sales perspective, BYD’s Dynasty series remains one of the company’s key volume drivers.

BYD Dynasty lineup delivery in June

Data shows the Dynasty lineup delivered 157,000 vehicles in June, making up nearly 40% of BYD’s passenger car sales, with H1 total deliveries at 714,000 units.

Within the lineup, the Yuan family delivered 72,546 units, continuing to serve as a major volume contributor, while the Song and Qin families recorded deliveries of 53,653 and 14,900 units respectively.

Based on current information, the reported “production halt” appears to be more of a product transition rather than a complete withdrawal.

As the Max, Ultra and new-generation larger models gradually replace existing products, BYD’s Dynasty lineup is entering a new product cycle, while the L-series could continue operating in overseas markets under a different strategy.
