BYD Set to Complete 10,000th Flash-Charging Station, Halfway to Year-End Goal

On Aug. 27, BYD announced that a ceremony for the completion of its 10,000th flash-charging station will be held on August 28 at the company’s flagship flash-charging station in Longhua, Shenzhen.

Publicly available information indicates that the station took less than six months to build from groundbreaking to completion.

For BYD, the pace of flash-charging network expansion has become a key milestone in the company’s broader new-energy business expansion this year.

In March, BYD unveiled its second-generation Blade Battery and flash-charging technology.

This supports charging equipment capable of delivering a peak output of up to 1.5 megawatts per charging gun.

Combined with the second-generation Blade Battery, BYD’s flash-charging system can charge a vehicle from 10% to 70% in about five minutes, and from 10% to 97% in about nine minutes.

BYD’s high-voltage platform and flash-charging technology have also received several forms of external recognition this year.

On August 11, the company’s flash-charging technology won the German Paul Pietsch Award, becoming the first Chinese company to receive the award since it was established in 1989.

In July, BYD’s second-generation Blade Battery and flash-charging technology were also selected by China’s MIIT for inclusion in a series of “major national equipment” cases, alongside technologies such as controlled rocket recovery.

Under its “Flash Charging China” plan, BYD aims to build 20,000 flash-charging stations nationwide by the end of 2026, including 18,000 urban stations and 2,000 highway stations.

Based on the current 10,000 completed stations, BYD still needs to build about another 10,000 stations over the roughly four months remaining in the year.

This requirs an average completion rate of about 2,500 stations per month.

To reduce the land and channel pressure associated with building its own charging network, the company is also seeking external partnerships.

In June, BYD signed with Sinopec to leverage the state-owned energy giant’s nationwide network of fuel stations to build integrated service stations combining “fueling + flash charging + convenience services.”

BYD has continued to invest in high-voltage platforms, charging technology and energy-replenishment infrastructure in recent years.

Its flash-charging technology has also begun expanding into overseas markets.

BYD’s first flash-charging station in Germany officially began operations in May, becoming the company’s first megawatt-level flash-charging project in Europe.

Under its current plan, BYD aims to build 6,000 flash-charging stations overseas, including 3,000 in Europe, 2,000 in the Americas and 1,000 across the Asia-Pacific region.
