- BYD’s Song L GT enters final test phase with sharper front design and expected 2026 launch.
- Specs hint at up to 87.0 kWh LFP packs and CLTC range as high as 662 km.
- Success hinges on BYD’s second-gen Blade Battery, fast charging, and competitive pricing.
An undisguised prototype of the Song L GT has surfaced online for the first time, offering the clearest look yet at the production model. The new vehicle is expected to succeed the Song L EV as BYD’s flagship shooting-brake-style crossover.
The biggest design changes appear at the front. Compared with the current Song L EV, the side profile and rear remain largely unchanged. The front adopts a more aggressive three-section bumper with larger air intakes, giving the vehicle a sportier appearance. The overall styling moves closer to the original Song L concept unveiled in 2023.

The Song L GT first appeared in China’s regulatory filings in July 2025. It was originally scheduled to launch later that year.
The rollout was delayed by nearly one year following BYD’s broader restructuring of the Dynasty Series product lineup. With multiple undisguised test vehicles recently spotted, the model appears to have entered its final preparation phase. A formal launch is expected later in 2026.
According to the 2025 regulatory filing, the Song L GT measures 4,840 mm long, 1,950 mm wide, 1,560 mm tall, with a 2,930 mm wheelbase. It is positioned as a mid-size battery-electric shooting-brake-style crossover SUV.
The filing listed two LFP battery packs with capacities of 71.8 kWh and 87.0 kWh. CLTC driving range was rated at 550 km, 602 km, or 662 km depending on configuration.

Those specifications, however, were submitted nearly one year ago. BYD has yet to confirm whether the production model will retain the same battery options or body dimensions.
Given BYD’s current product update cycle, the Song L GT is widely expected to adopt the second-generation Blade Battery and upgraded Flash Charging technology. Its signature shooting-brake-style crossover roofline and powered active rear spoiler are both expected to remain.
The Song L EV was unveiled as a concept car in 2023. Its shooting-brake-style crossover styling quickly became a highlight of the auto show, challenging perceptions of BYD’s traditionally conservative design language. To date, the Song L EV remains the only mass-produced model under BYD’s main brand (excluding sub-brands) to be equipped with a powered deployable rear spoiler.
Sales have weakened considerably over the past two years. The Song L EV delivered 46,683 units in 2024, benefiting from its distinctive styling after launch. Deliveries fell to 14,508 units in 2025. During the first five months of 2026, cumulative deliveries totaled only about 1K units, reflecting continued softening demand.
The competitive landscape has also become far more crowded. The Xiaomi YU7 quickly established itself through its styling and intelligent features. Although sales have recently moderated, the model has already secured a solid customer base. New rivals including the Voyah Passion S and Luxeed RX are also scheduled to launch this year, both equipped with Huawei’s advanced assisted-driving system.

Against those competitors, the Song L GT’s biggest advantage lies in BYD’s vertically integrated technology ecosystem and supply-chain scale. The expected adoption of the second-generation Blade Battery and Flash Charging technology should place charging performance among the industry’s leading offerings.
Following pricing strategies seen on models such as the Seal 08, the Song L GT could also enter the market with competitive pricing.
Market reception to BYD’s latest battery technology has been encouraging. Models including the DaTang EV, Fangchengbao Ti7 EV, Seal 08 EV, and Denza Z9 GT have all recorded solid order volumes after adopting the second-generation Blade Battery. As consumer acceptance continues to grow, the youth-oriented Song L GT will become another important test of BYD’s strategy in the electric sport crossover segment.
