  • BYD hits 17 million NEV production as the Seal 08 rolls off its Xi’an line.
  • BYD shaved the last million down to under three months, signaling a quarterly ramp-up.
  • Overseas sales surged 95% in June, now accounting for over 40% of BYD’s volumes.

BYD announced on Wednesday that its 17 millionth new energy vehicle (NEV) has officially rolled off the production line.

The milestone vehicle was the Seal 08, a flagship sedan under BYD’s Ocean series, produced at the company’s Xi’an plant.

The achievement came less than three months after BYD produced its 16 millionth NEV.

On April 17, BYD’s 16 millionth NEV rolled off the line, with the milestone model being the second-generation Denza D9.

The accelerating pace of production growth highlights the rapid expansion of BYD’s NEV manufacturing scale.

On December 18, 2025, BYD surpassed cumulative NEV production of 15 million units.

It took around four months to move from 15 million to 16 million units, while the latest 1 million-unit increase was completed in less than three months.

Looking back at BYD’s NEV development journey, the company produced its first NEV in December 2008 and reached the 1 million-unit production milestone in May 2021, taking nearly 13 years.

Since then, as the NEV market expanded rapidly, BYD discontinued ICE production and continued to improve its product portfolio, driving simultaneous growth in production capacity and sales.

In November 2024, BYD produced its 10 millionth NEV. It took only 13 months to increase output from 10 million to 15 million units, and the pace of adding another million vehicles has now entered a quarterly cycle.

The faster production ramp-up is also supported by improvements across BYD’s supply chain capabilities.

As second-generation Blade Battery production lines gradually increase capacity, BYD’s vehicle delivery capabilities have further strengthened, supporting sales recovery.

Data showed that BYD sold 403,472 NEVs in June, up 5.5% year on year.

In the first half of 2026, cumulative sales reached 1,808,511 units, down 15.6% year on year.

However, overseas markets continued to deliver strong growth and became an increasingly important growth driver.

In June, BYD’s overseas passenger vehicle and pickup truck sales reached 174,897 units, up 95% year on year, setting a new monthly export record. Overseas sales accounted for more than 40% of the company’s total sales.

During the first half of 2026, BYD’s overseas sales totaled approximately 789,000 units, up around 70.5% year on year.

BYD previously set a 2026 overseas sales target of 1.6 million units and said annual exports could potentially exceed that goal.

With continued expansion across Europe, Southeast Asia, Latin America and other markets, BYD is shifting from relying primarily on growth in China toward a more balanced expansion strategy across domestic and international markets.

BYD Chairman Wang Chuanfu previously said the company aims to become the world’s largest automaker by scale by 2030.
