Beyond Cabin, Next-Generation Li Auto L6 Focuses on Charging Efficiency

Takeaways
  • Li Auto boosts L6 battery to 51kWh and WLTC range to 234km, cutting 20–80% charge to 12 minutes.
  • Peak charging power jumps to 274.4kW with 581A on a 400V architecture, enabling much faster replenishment.
  • Higher specs — bigger battery and M100 chip — raise unit costs and likely push the L6 price upward.

Li Auto has officially kicked off the pre-launch campaign for the next-generation L6. The updated range-extended SUV will debut on July 16.

The next-generation L6 upgrades energy replenishment efficiency, battery capacity, exterior design, interior layout, and intelligent features.

The model also enters a tougher market environment. It faces higher component costs and intensifying competition in China’s RMB 200,000-250,000 midsize SUV segment.

The biggest upgrade comes from the battery system. The next-generation L6 increases battery capacity from 36.8kWh to 51kWh. WLTC pure-electric range rises from 182km to 234km. Li Auto says the vehicle can charge from 20% to 80% in 12 minutes.

By comparison, the current L6 supports a peak charging power of 70kW with a maximum current of 192A. The new model remains based on a 400V architecture, but peak charging power rises to 274.4kW. Maximum current climbs to 581A.

The larger battery pack, combined with faster charging, reflects the broader shift in China’s range-extended EV market. Consumers increasingly demand longer electric driving range and higher replenishment efficiency.

The exterior design continues Li Auto’s latest family styling. The next-generation L6 retains the signature Star Ring daytime running lights and split-headlamp layout, with updates focused on details.

The front bumper drops the previous full-width design, adopting a larger lower grille. The SUV receives semi-hidden door handles and new wheel designs. The taillights gain a smoked finish, while the license plate area moves upward.

Two new exterior colors, Wind Letter Purple and Dune Yellow, will also be offered. Vehicle dimensions remain largely unchanged, with overall length increasing by 10mm to 4,935mm.

The interior keeps the current minimalist layout with several refinements. The wireless charging area is repositioned lower. The center display and passenger screen are upgraded into a single integrated wide screen, removing the previous black divider.

Ambient lighting is added to the door panels, while the small steering wheel display is removed. The cabin adopts a more unified design, with a new all-white interior option.

For intelligent features, the next-generation L6 is expected to adopt the same M100 chip used in flagship models including the L9 and L8. The upgrade is expected to improve cockpit computing power and intelligent driving performance.

However, higher specifications are also pushing up costs. According to previous reports from ChinaEV Home, the next-generation L6 could see a noticeable increase in per-unit costs compared with the current model.

The larger battery pack alone is expected to add several thousand yuan in costs. Memory components and computing chips are also becoming more expensive. As a result, the market widely expects the next-generation L6 could receive a price increase.

Competition in China’s RMB 200,000-250,000 midsize SUV market has intensified. Models including BYD Fangchengbao Tai 7 and Xiaomi YU7 have already secured market positions.

Newer entrants such as Aito M6 have also gained momentum, recording monthly sales above 10K units for two consecutive months after launch.

Li Auto’s latest delivery data highlights the pressure behind the L6 refresh. The company delivered 30,895 vehicles in June 2026, down 14.84% year over year, down 7.36% from the previous month.Sales remain highly concentrated around individual models. The Li Auto i6 delivered 21,453 units, accounting for 69% of total deliveries.

Before the i6 launch, the L6 was one of Li Auto’s key volume drivers. The model sold 190K units in 2024, followed by 160K units in 2025, maintaining average monthly deliveries above 10K units.

However, in the first half of 2026, cumulative L6 deliveries reached only 29K units. The next-generation L6 will become a key model for Li Auto as the company seeks new growth momentum in an increasingly competitive SUV market.
