BYD Ocean Series Eyes First MPV Launch by Year-End

BYD’s Ocean Series is preparing to enter the MPV market, with its first model expected to launch by the end of 2026, General Manager Zhang Zhuo said in a media interview on Aug. 23.

The move would mark the first MPV under BYD’s Ocean Series, adding a new body style to the brand’s product lineup. Zhang did not disclose details of the vehicle. He said MPVs remain “a unique presence” in the market.

The Ocean Series first showed its MPV ambitions at the 2026 Beijing Auto Show in April, where it unveiled the Ocean-V concept. BYD positioned the concept as an off-road-capable MPV, a camping home, a mobile home theater, and a family-oriented recreational vehicle.

The Ocean-V concept focuses on multi-scenario use. The cabin drops conventional physical buttons; a single control activates an “Ocean Movie Mode.” The steering wheel retracts, allowing the dashboard to flip up into a large projection screen.

In camping mode, the seats can face each other in two rows. With the seats folded flat, the cabin can form a full-size bed.

It remains unclear whether the production MPV due later this year will be directly based on Ocean-V. Earlier market reports suggested the model could carry the “Whale” name, potentially using a plug-in hybrid powertrain. BYD has yet to disclose specific powertrain details.

The move comes as BYD’s Dynasty Series, another core sales channel alongside the Ocean Series, already has an MPV in its lineup.

The Dynasty Series launched the Xia MPV in January 2025. Positioned as a midsize-to-large MPV, the Xia carries a 249.8K–309.8K RMB ($37.2K–$46.1K) price range, using a plug-in hybrid system.

Sales, however, have yet to make the Xia a meaningful growth driver for BYD. The Xia sold 27,288 units in 2025. Over the same period, Wey Gaoshan sales reached 59,449 units; Buick GL8 sales hit 56,853 units; Buick GL8 plug-in hybrid sales reached 55,281 units. The Xia remains well behind leading rivals.

In November 2025, BYD rolled out an annual update for the Xia, with pricing as the main adjustment. After official incentives, prices fell to 196.8K–259.8K RMB ($29.3K–$38.6K). The lower price failed to lift sales. The Xia sold just 4,515 units from January through July 2026.

The weak performance partly reflects BYD’s broader market strategy this year. More importantly, the Xia has yet to build a clear edge in product competitiveness.

BYD is now expected to position the Ocean Series MPV close to the Xia in size and market segment. The new model is likely to use BYD’s second-generation Blade Battery, paired with BYD Megawatt Charging.

The Ocean Series’ younger, more lifestyle-focused design language could give the MPV a different market pitch. It is expected to face models such as Leapmotor D99 and Wey Gaoshan.

The Ocean Series MPV therefore serves more than a lineup-expansion role. It will test whether BYD can use the brand’s younger image to carve out a new growth lane in China’s increasingly competitive MPV market.
