- Tesla launches stripped-down, cheaper Model 3 in Hong Kong and Macau, cutting entry prices by ~8–9%.
- Company removes premium interior/exterior features to lower costs while claiming a 572km range.
- Move targets price-sensitive buyers amid fierce BYD-led competition and declining Tesla mainland sales.
Tesla launches lower-spec, lower-priced Model 3 versions in China’s Hong Kong and Macau.
Hong Kong entry price hits HK$205K (RMB 176K / $26.2K); Macau starts at MOP 252K (RMB 210K / $31.2K); 8.5% and 9.35% below previous entry trims.

The new model offers a claimed maximum range of 572km. Tesla cuts costs by simplifying interior/exterior trims; ambient lighting, interior trim materials, wheels, rear entertainment screen all removed or downgraded.
The move stems from competitive pressure in Hong Kong. Transport Department data showed BYD sales hitting 9,751 units, up 67.57%; first time overtaking Tesla as Hong Kong’s best-selling car brand. Tesla sold 9,193 units, down 3.8%.

Unlike BYD and other Chinese brands expanding lineups; Tesla relies mainly on Model 3 and Model Y. A cheaper Model 3 widens reach without adding new models; targets price-sensitive buyers.
A cheaper Model 3 may also hit mainland China. In January, a low-spec “Model 3 Standard Range Upgrade” entered China’s new-energy vehicle declaration catalog; equipped with 52.9kWh battery; 480km CLTC range.

For comparison, current Rear-Wheel Drive Model 3 features a 62.5kWh battery; 635km CLTC range; starts at RMB 235.5K ($35.0K).
Model 3 faces pressure in mainland; July retail sales hit only 2,091 units. Jan-Jul cumulative sales hit 68.5K units; down from 102.4K units a year earlier; a drop of roughly 33%.
Tesla may use the cheaper model to spur demand; entry price potentially approaches RMB 200K ($29.8K).

Competition remains intense. More domestic models offer larger body sizes, richer smart cabins, fuller ADAS features below RMB 200K ($29.8K). Whether Chinese buyers accept a stripped-down Model 3 at lower prices remains unproven.
