Chery to Add Four New SUVs in UK as Local Sales Top 29K Units

Takeaways
  • Chery will add four updated SUVs in the UK next year including a flagship Tiggo X plug-in hybrid, expanding local lineup to capture more small-to-large SUV buyers amid intense segment competition.
  • Tiggo X is about five meters long, offers seven seats and a PHEV electric-only range of about 124 miles; Chery reports roughly 29,000 UK sales to date and 23,571 registrations year-to-date.
  • Targets premium and mainstream SUV buyers from rivals, but execution risks include production capacity limits, localisation timing, tuning effectiveness for UK roads, and potential margin pressure.

Chery, which entered the UK market about a year ago, was preparing for another round of product expansion, according to Autocar.

Chery plans to launch four new or updated SUVs in the UK next year, including an EV, while establishing an R&D center in Bedfordshire to begin localizing vehicle tuning for the British market.

Chery UK General Manager Farrell Hsu said the brand has sold about 29,000 vehicles in the UK to date, already exceeding its 2026 sales target.

Within the wider group, however, Chery’s sales still trail those of fellow brands Jaecoo and Omoda.

According to SMMT data, Chery registered 2,380 vehicles in the UK in August, up 18,207% year on year, while registrations for the first eight months reached 23,571 units.

Chery currently sells the Tiggo 4, Tiggo 7, Tiggo 8 and Tiggo 9 in the UK, covering the small to large SUV segments.

The Tiggo X family is expected to be among the more notable additions. Although the name has not been finalized, Chery is likely to bring the Tiggo X unveiled at 2026 Beijing Auto Show to the UK.

Positioned as the brand’s flagship SUV, the model is around 5 meters long, offers seven seats and uses a plug-in hybrid powertrain with an electric-only range of about 124 miles.

Beyond expanding its lineup, Chery is also changing how it approaches the UK market.

The planned Milbrook R&D center will focus on translating feedback from British consumers and media into product changes that can be implemented directly by Chery’s engineering teams in China.

British roads are narrower and more winding than those in China, while road conditions are generally less favorable.

Chery plans to use this feedback to adjust steering, chassis tuning and advanced driver-assistance systems.

The localization approach could eventually be adopted by other Chery brands, including Jaecoo, Omoda and Lepas.

On the product side, plug-in hybrids are currently Chery’s fastest-growing segment in the UK.

Hsu said PHEVs account for about three-quarters of Chery’s UK sales and that production capacity, rather than demand, is currently the main constraint on sales.

The UK market itself is also shifting toward PHEVs. SMMT data showed PHEV sales in the UK rose 39.8% year on year to 13,707 units in August, lifting their market share to 14.5%.
