Chery Targets 100K Robotaxis Worldwide by 2030 With Market-Specific Plans

Takeaways
  • Chery announced a targeted global Robotaxi rollout aiming for 100,000 vehicles by 2030, tailoring region-specific operating strategies to capture local ride-hailing and fleet share amid intensifying competition.
  • The company showcased a factory-integrated Exeed-based Robotaxi with roof-mounted lidar, steer-by-wire Flying Fish chassis, and said it invested more than RMB 110 billion ($16.41 billion) in R&D over the past five years.
  • Direct rivals include XPeng, WeRide, Pony.ai, Baidu Apollo Go and Caocao Mobility, while execution risks include scaling overseas regulation, localized tech adaptation, and achieving commercial unit economics on schedule.

At the 2026 Chery Global Innovation Conference, Chery unveiled its global Robotaxi rollout strategy, targeting the deployment of 100,000 vehicles worldwide by 2030.

The automaker plans to adopt different operating and market-entry strategies across regions. In China, it will combine vehicle platforms with real-world operations.

In the Middle East, Chery will start with highly reliable vehicle platforms and gradually expand commercial Robotaxi operations.

In Europe, the company plans to bypass the vehicle-platform development stage and move directly into full-stack Robotaxi operations.

In Southeast Asia, Chery will develop vehicle platforms while building localized operating systems and adapting core perception and decision-making algorithms to local conditions.

In the Americas, the company will prioritize vehicle platforms and roll out its intelligent mobility business in stages.

This relies on its in-house autonomous-driving systems, chips and large AI models to support large-scale overseas Robotaxi deployment.

At the conference, Chery displayed a purpose-built, factory-integrated Robotaxi based on an Exeed model and equipped with its Falcon advanced driver-assistance system.

The vehicle features roof-mounted perception hardware, including lidar, and demonstrated urban-driving capabilities such as following other vehicles.

It also showed the ability to yield to avoid obstacles, navigate intersections and maneuver around obstructions.

Chery also showcased its Flying Fish intelligent driving unit, which integrates technologies such as steer-by-wire and active suspension into a chassis platform, providing a hardware foundation for autonomous vehicles.

By combining in-house autonomous-driving technology, chips and large AI models, Chery aims to build an integrated technology portfolio spanning vehicle platforms and autonomous-driving systems, supporting vehicle development and deployment across different markets.

Yin Tongyue, chairman of Chery Holding Group, said at the conference that the company had invested more than RMB 110 billion ($16.41 billion) in research and development over the past five years.

Chery will accelerate its transformation into an AI-driven global intelligent technology company.

Competition in China’s Robotaxi market is also shifting from technical validation toward commercial operations.

Among automakers, XPeng has named its Robotaxi business XPENG YOYO and launched an official website and ride-hailing mini-program.

The company expects the business to reach unit-level breakeven in the second half of 2027.

Mobility service providers including WeRide, Pony.ai, Baidu’s Apollo Go and Caocao Mobility are already running regular services in multiple Chinese cities.

As China’s Robotaxi market expands, Goldman Sachs raised its forecasts for the country’s autonomous ride-hailing fleet in an industry report published in April 2026.

It projected a fleet of 14,000 vehicles in 2026, 705,000 by 2030 and 3.1 million by 2035.
