BYD to Bring City NOA to Europe in 2027, Starting With Denza Z9 GT

Takeaways
  • BYD will introduce its City Navigation on Driving Assistant (CNOA) to Denza models in Europe via OTA in 2027, debuting on the Denza Z9 GT after local validation and regulatory framing.
  • The Denza Z9 GT ships with one LiDAR, 11 cameras, three millimeter-wave radars and 12 ultrasonics, and BYD cites 3.72 million vehicles collecting 230 million km daily to train its system.
  • The system targets urban ADAS buyers competing with premium assisted-driving offerings, but faces regulatory labeling limits, validation timing, and scaling risks for hardware and charging rollout.

BYD announced at the Paris Motor Show that it plans to introduce its City Navigation on Driving Assistant (CNOA) system to Denza vehicles in Europe in 2027.

The urban navigation assistance system, known as God’s Eye B in China, will debut in Europe on the Denza Z9 GT through an over-the-air (OTA) software update.

In China, God’s Eye B can handle a range of urban driving scenarios, including stopping at red lights, yielding at roundabouts, navigating intersections and making left turns. The system can also change lanes, overtake double-parked vehicles and detect pedestrians and cyclists on narrow roads.

However, drivers remain responsible when CNOA is activated. An in-cabin camera continuously monitors the driver’s gaze, head position and hand placement on the steering wheel.

The system is supported by a hardware suite that includes one LiDAR sensor, 11 cameras, three millimeter-wave radars and 12 ultrasonic sensors. The Denza Z9 GT comes standard with all of these components.

Stella Li, BYD executive vice president, said at the Paris Motor Show that the vehicle can already navigate Paris autonomously in testing scenarios. However, due to regulatory requirements, BYD will not market the technology as autonomous driving, but rather as intelligent urban navigation assistance.

Li said the system is designed to reduce driving workload, improve comfort and enhance safety. “We will roll out this system across the entire Denza lineup. Once software validation is complete, the feature can be activated through OTA updates, with the goal of making it available to customers before 2027.”

In May, BYD announced in China that it would provide accident loss coverage for vehicles equipped with its God’s Eye intelligent driving system and Urban NOA functions.

BYD said the confidence behind the policy comes from its large-scale intelligent driving data base. More than 3.72 million vehicles equipped with intelligent driving assistance systems are currently operating on public roads, accumulating over 230 million km of mileage every day. The data helps accelerate algorithm training and optimization for the God’s Eye system.

Beyond intelligent driving, BYD is also expanding its fast-charging infrastructure in Europe.

During the Paris Motor Show, BYD announced plans to accelerate the rollout of its flash-charging network across 15 European countries. The company targets more than 100 flash-charging stations by the end of 2026 and plans to expand the network to over 3,000 stations by the end of 2027.

BYD has already launched flash-charging station projects in the UK and Germany.
