Third-Gen BYD Han May Debut at Late-November Guangzhou Auto Show

Takeaways
  • BYD will likely unveil a fully redesigned third‑generation Han at Guangzhou, shifting to a lower, sportier profile and expanding offerings to better compete upmarket and against premium Chinese sedans.
  • Key specs include lengths 5,156 mm, wheelbase 3,030 mm, BEV single‑motor 245 kW and 300 kW, BEV dual‑motor 520 kW, PHEV 1.5T+200 kW; expected pricing RMB 180K–220K (about $26.9K–$32.9K).
  • Targeting mid‑to‑high‑end buyers and rival models like BYD’s own DaHan and premium domestic sedans, execution risks include timing to market, higher pricing squeezing volume, and ADAS/LiDAR integration and supply constraints.

BYD may unveil the third-generation Han at the Guangzhou Auto Show later this month, marking the model’s first full redesign in four years.

BYD recently hinted on social media that it would bring a highly anticipated model to the November show to give customers another option, according to Lu Tian, a manager at BYD’s Dynasty series.

Two unreleased models from the Dynasty lineup have surfaced so far: the third-generation Tang and Han. The new Tang made its debut at the Chengdu Auto Show in August and is now preparing for launch, with display vehicles gradually arriving at dealerships.

This makes the third-generation Han the more likely candidate for the Guangzhou debut. The model appeared in China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) vehicle catalog last month, revealing substantial changes to both its dimensions and exterior design.

The new Han moves away from the more conservative, business-oriented styling of the current model. Instead, it adopts more design cues from the Han L, giving it a lower-slung and sportier profile.

At the front, it features the same uninterrupted full-width Dragon Whisker daytime running lights as the third-generation Tang. The rear gets a full-width Chinese-knot taillight design inspired by the Phoenix Feather motif, following a similar lighting style to the Han L.

The sides feature flowing, calligraphy-inspired contours, while semi-flush door handles shared with the DaHan are also fitted. Buyers will be able to choose from a range of options, including a blacked-out sport package, a contrasting black roof and multiple wheel designs.

The third-generation Han measures 5,156 mm long, 1,969 mm wide and 1,492 mm or 1,507 mm tall, depending on the version. Its wheelbase stretches to 3,030 mm. By comparison, the current model measures 4,995 mm × 1,910 mm × 1,495 mm, with a 2,920 mm wheelbase.

MIIT filings show that the new Han will be available as both a battery-electric vehicle and a plug-in hybrid.

The BEV lineup will include two rear-wheel-drive single-motor versions rated at 245 kW and 300 kW, along with a 520 kW dual-motor all-wheel-drive variant. The PHEV will pair a 1.5T engine with a 200 kW electric motor.

Buyers will also be able to opt for LiDAR. The model is expected to feature BYD’s advanced God’s Eye driver assistance system.

Based on BYD’s previous launch schedule, the third-generation Han could reach the market before the end of this year. Its pricing may rise from that of the current model to reflect upgrades in size, styling and powertrain options. We expect a price range of RMB 180K–220K ($26.9K–$32.9K).

BYD’s Dynasty lineup sold 203,040 vehicles in October, up 13.6% YoY and 14.4% MoM. Monthly sales exceeded 200K for the first time this year. The flagship SUV DaTang accounted for 14,000 units, and is expected to retain its position as China’s best-selling full-size SUV.

Meanwhile, the Dynasty lineup’s flagship D-segment sedan, DaHan, has made a steady start. Launched on October 13, it recorded 4,000 sales in its first month, with an average transaction price exceeding RMB 250K ($37.4K).
