Recently, BYD Energy Storage and Grenergy, a globally renowned Spanish renewable energy company, signed an energy storage order agreement to supply a 3.5GWh energy storage system for Phase VI of Grenergy’s Oasis de Atacama project in northern Chile. This agreement marks the largest energy storage supply deal in Latin America and the largest collaboration between the two companies to date.
Under the agreement, BYD Energy Storage will provide 624 units of its MC Cube-T Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) for the Elena Solar-Plus-Storage Power Station, a key component of the Oasis de Atacama project. The Elena facility boasts 446MW of photovoltaic capacity and 3.5GWh of energy storage capacity. The MC Cube-T BESS utilizes BYD’s proprietary CTS (Cell-to-System) ultra-integrated technology, which directly integrates Blade Batteries into the storage system, improving space utilization by 98% and achieving a cell-to-system volume ratio (Vcts) exceeding 33%. This highly integrated system not only enhances efficiency but also simplifies layout, installation, maintenance, and expansion. Additionally, the MC Cube-T BESS features modular cabin design, cluster-level safety protection, and precision thermal management, enabling robust performance in extreme environments such as wide temperature ranges and intense sandstorms, ensuring system stability and longevity.
Chile’s Oasis de Atacama project, one of the world’s largest electrochemical energy storage initiatives, is being constructed in seven phases. Upon completion, it will reach a total storage capacity of 11GWh, potentially ranking among the globe’s largest energy storage projects. BYD previously supplied 3GWh of BESS for the project’s first three phases, bringing the cumulative collaboration with Grenergy to 6.5GWh.
David Ruiz de Andrés, CEO of Grenergy, stated during the signing ceremony, this agreement solidifies our leadership in energy storage. The Oasis de Atacama project’s total installed capacity now exceeds the energy storage scales of countries like the UK and Germany, establishing a benchmark for 24/7 clean energy supply.
