Volkswagen China has officially announced that Robert Cisek will assume the role of CEO for the Volkswagen brand in China starting July 1, 2025, succeeding the current CEO, Stefan Mecha.

Although his official term begins in July, Cisek has actually been stationed at Volkswagen’s Beijing headquarters since January 1 this year. He has been overseeing product strategy and planning, using this time to get acquainted with the local market and align with internal teams.

Cisek brings a solid industrial background and extensive international management experience. He previously worked at McKinsey and BMW, specializing in strategy and manufacturing operations. Since joining the Volkswagen Group in 2018, he has held key leadership roles, including Managing Director of Volkswagen South Africa during the pandemic and chip shortage, and later returned to Germany to lead MQB platform production planning.

Volkswagen China’s decision to appoint Cisek is a clear signal. The company plans to launch at least six all-electric models in China by 2026, including four compact SUVs based on the CMP platform and CEA architecture.

Volkswagen also operates three joint ventures in China—FAW-Volkswagen, SAIC Volkswagen, and Volkswagen Anhui—spanning across EVs, range-extended vehicles, and plug-in hybrids. Effectively coordinating these partnerships and driving forward an increasingly complex product strategy will be one of Cisek’s main challenges.

As China’s auto market grows more competitive, Volkswagen must not only defend its long-standing brand position but also adapt quickly to the accelerating shift toward electrification and intelligent mobility. Whether Cisek can rise to the challenge remains to be seen.
