Chery Responds: Cooperation with India’s JSW is Only for Parts Supply, No Technology Transfer

Chery responded, stating that its cooperation with India’s JSW is limited to parts supply and does not involve technology transfer.

On July 25, Chery issued a clarification statement in response to recent foreign media reports claiming that Chery was “providing technology to India’s JSW Group to help them build a new energy vehicle brand.”

The controversy stemmed from a Bloomberg report on July 24, which quoted sources saying that Chery would supply technology and components to JSW to assist them in launching their own new energy vehicle brand in India.

This sparked considerable debate. While some saw it as a positive example of “technology going global,” many industry observers and netizens expressed concerns. They questioned whether it was truly appropriate to share core technologies with potential competitors during a critical period when China’s industry chain advantages are still being established.

In its statement, Chery emphasized that it had previously clarified the situation through certain channels and issued this further clarification to prevent misinterpretation. The company reiterated that its cooperation with JSW was solely focused on parts supply, with no technology transfer involved.

In fact, Chery’s overseas strategy has made positive progress in recent years. According to data from Yiche, Chery ranked first in China’s passenger car export rankings for the first half of 2025, with 544,937 vehicles exported, a 3.5% year-on-year increase, leading BYD by more than 100,000 vehicles.

Chery’s export markets now include Europe, Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and South America, with the overall export momentum remaining strong.

It’s worth noting that as Chinese automakers gradually increase their share in global competition, similar cooperative issues are likely to arise more frequently. Expanding overseas is a growing trend, but how to protect core technologies and manage boundaries is becoming a new challenge for every carmaker going global.
