China NEV Weekly Sales Ranking (Week 32): Tesla Hits 13.4K, Leapmotor 9.3K, NIO Group 6.1K

The market positioning battle ahead of the peak September–October sales season is about to kick off.

The sales ranking for China’s new energy vehicle (NEV) market in Week 32 of 2025 (August 4–10) has been released.

Continuing last week’s fierce competition, the top 10 brands remain unchanged, but with new breakout models entering the mix, some brands saw major ranking jumps. Overall sales declined, with only two brands surpassing 10,000 units—BYD and Tesla.

BYD continued to lead with 54,800 units sold, down 10.06% week-over-week.

Tesla ranked second with 13,400 units, up 21.6%. Notably, Tesla completed MIIT filing for the Model Y L and launched the Model 3 Long Range RWD this week. The former, set for a Q3 debut, will directly target the Xiaomi YU7, Li Auto i8, and ONVO L90, while the latter improves competitiveness via extended range. Both models have the potential to become future sales growth drivers for Tesla.

Leapmotor led the emerging EV makers with 9,300 units. Its newly launched B01 reached over 10,000 units in just seven days, thanks to an attractive ¥89,800 ($12,572) starting price and lidar hardware.

XPeng posted its first drop in nearly a month, down 13.3% to 7,900 units. The all-new P7, which opened pre-sales on August 6, features an 800V high-voltage platform, 5C ultra-fast-charging AI battery, and Turing chip, and could boost sales upon launch.

NIO Group sold 6,100 units, missing expectations of breaking 10,000. ONVO sold 3,234 units, with the L90 contributing 65% with 2093 units. Firefly sold 684 units, and the NIO brand sold 2,162 units, down 37.33%. ONVO also launched a 60-kWh battery BaaS option for the L90 this week, providing more options for ite users.

Li Auto remained under pressure, with sales falling 2.9% to 5,300 units. Facing strong competition from the ONVO L90, the Li Auto i8 saw weak initial demand, prompting the company to consolidate its three trims into a single ¥339,800 ($47,572) version.

Xiaomi sold 6,799 units, including 3,700 SU7s, 2,500 YU7s, and 600 SU7 Ultras, with production constraints still limiting growth.

Overall, Week 32 saw Leapmotor grow via affordable tech, the ONVO L90 score a targeted win in the mid-to-large SUV segment, and Li Auto struggling through a strategy shift. With the new XPeng P7, Li Auto’s lineup restructuring, and HIMA’s ramping production, the pre-September–October market positioning battle is about to heat up.
