Momenta’s Self-Developed Chip Activated and Installed in Vehicles, Performance Comparable to NVIDIA Orin

Momenta’s self-developed chip rivals NVIDIA Orin-X and Qualcomm 8650, with plans to cut urban assisted driving costs to ¥5,000 ($700).

According to 36Kr, Momenta’s self-developed assisted driving chip has recently been activated and entered vehicle testing.

It is understood that the chip’s performance mainly benchmarks against NVIDIA’s Orin-X and Qualcomm’s 8650, both mainstream assisted driving chips.

Sources revealed that the hardware interfaces of Momenta’s chip are similar to those of Qualcomm’s 8650 chip. As a result, minimal PCB modifications are needed for rapid mass production and vehicle installation.

With the chip now activated, it has passed the most basic performance tests. If subsequent tests go smoothly, Momenta’s self-developed chip will be ready for mass production, making Momenta, like Horizon Robotics, a supplier capable of delivering integrated software and hardware for assisted driving. Sources also stated that Momenta plans to reduce the cost of its urban assisted driving solution to the ¥5,000 ($700) level, or even lower.

At the same time, Momenta is rapidly advancing capital operations and overseas market projects.

Currently, Momenta is developing projects for IM Motors’ exports to Germany, the UK, Thailand, and Australia. Among these, the Germany project is about to enter the SOP (Start of Production) phase. In Munich, Germany, Momenta’s Robotaxi test vehicles, in partnership with Uber, have already hit the road.

Industry insiders disclosed that for overseas expansion in assisted driving technology, automakers currently have limited choices. Bosch is one, Momenta is another, while Horizon Robotics and Huawei remain relatively cautious. Although Bosch has a compliance advantage, it entered high-level solutions relatively late. “Therefore, in some overseas projects, Momenta can even secure development fees exceeding ¥100 million ($14 million),” one source revealed. This is considered quite rare in today’s highly competitive assisted driving industry.

With its chip activated and overseas projects nearing implementation, Momenta is swiftly expanding its commercial footprint.
