China NEV Weekly Sales Ranking (Week 33): BYD Hits 65.2 K, Tesla 14 K, NIO Inc. 7.2 K

  • NIO Inc. delivered 7,200 vehicles last week, up 17.87% week-on-week, with its ONVO brand leading sales—2,330 for L90 and 1,460 for L60.
  • Tesla, meanwhile, recorded weekly sales of 14,000 units in China, representing a 4.48% rise compared with the previous week.

China’s new energy vehicle (NEV) market released its sales ranking for Week 33 of 2025 (August 11–17).

The overall landscape largely followed last week’s trend, though notable shifts in rankings and sales volumes suggest intensifying competition among emerging automakers.

BYD maintained its commanding lead with weekly sales of 65,200 units, up nearly 20% week-on-week. With a comprehensive portfolio covering sedans, SUVs, and MPVs, BYD’s dominance at the top remains unshakable.

Tesla secured second place with 14,000 units, posting a modest increase from the previous week. Notably, Tesla launched the six-seat Model Y L on its official China website today, priced from RMB 339,000 ($47,800) with a CLTC range of 751 km. Positioned for family users, the new model directly challenges competitors such as Li Auto and ONVO.

Leapmotor continued to lead the new forces segment with 10,400 units, up around 12% week-on-week. Its B01 model, which secured over 10,000 orders within 72 hours of launch, has become the company’s key growth driver.

Leapmotor’s interim financial report, released yesterday, revealed deliveries of over 220,000 vehicles in H1 2025, with July alone surpassing 50,000 units. The company also achieved a net profit of RMB 30 million ($4.1 million), marking its first half-year profitability. In light of this momentum, Leapmotor raised its annual sales target from 600,000 to 650,000 units.

Huawei-backed Harmony Intelligent Mobility Alliance (HIMA) delivered 8,900 units, edging back to second among emerging players. The AITO brand maintained its sales backbone with 7,708 units, led by the M9 (3,863 units) and M8 (2,013 units), together accounting for over 70% of sales.

Toward the end of August, HIMA is set to enter its busiest product launch cycle to date, with five models rolling out in quick succession: the all-new AITO M7, Luxeed S9T, Shangjie H5, and updated versions of the LUXEED R7 and S7.

Xpeng delivered 7,900 units, flat from the previous week. Its new P7, which opened for pre-orders on August 6, has drawn attention with its 800V platform and 5C fast-charging capability. Market expectations suggest it could significantly boost Xpeng’s sales after its official launch later this month.

On August 15, the new P7 set a record in a 24-hour endurance test with 3,961 km driven, surpassing benchmarks held by the Porsche Taycan, Mercedes-Benz CLA, and Xiaomi YU7.

Xiaomi also delivered 7,200 units, roughly on par with NIO. Its SU7 sedan remained the core product, though production bottlenecks continue to constrain deliveries. Notably, the SU7 Ultra has topped both the BEV and sedan rankings in the over-RMB 50,000 ($68,400) segment, with 12,618 units sold between January and July. Remarkably, it achieved 10,000 units in less than five months after launch.

Li Auto trailed behind with 5,600 units. Its new i8 model received a lukewarm response, prompting the company to simplify the lineup to a single configuration with a uniform price of RMB 339,800 ($46,900). However, the short-term impact remains limited.

In July, Li Auto delivered 30,731 units, down 39.74% year-on-year and 15.29% month-on-month.

Overall, Week 33 reinforced the stable leadership of BYD and Tesla, while within the new forces, Leapmotor leads, NIO and Xiaomi remain neck-and-neck, and Li Auto lags behind.

With Tesla’s Model Y L and Xpeng’s new P7 set to enter mass deliveries in the coming weeks, September’s market trajectory is likely to see fresh turbulence.
