Let’s take a look at some of the design details of the all-new ES8.
With less than 36 hours before its official debut, NIO has revealed the exterior design of the all-new ES8 on the morning of August 20, accompanied by a four-minute video explaining the design philosophy behind the flagship SUV.
In short, the ES8 stays true to NIO’s original design DNA, but after three generations of evolution, it now feels more luxurious, more substantial, and more expressive. Or as NIO puts it: moving “from understated to overt.”
Most importantly, the video unveils a wealth of new design details. Based on official information and six key frames from the film, here are the highlights that define the new ES8.
Fuller, More Refined Lines
The first highlight shows off the ES8’s body proportions. NIO describes “proportion and balance” as the foundation, but what truly matters is the “spirit” it conveys—confidence and ambition.

With a length of 5,280 mm and a wheelbase of 3,130 mm, NIO claims the new ES8 offers the “largest body volume under one million RMB.” Its wheelbase-to-length ratio is 4.60—longer and more elegant than the Range Rover’s 4.47.
Design refinements include flush “hidden water cut” windows, 2.5 square meters of flat glass area, pronounced shoulder lines, and 22-inch forged wheels. Together, these elevate the SUV’s stance and side profile to a new level of premium.
Upgraded Headlamps
The video also reveals the front fascia. While it’s not clear whether the ES8 will feature a “front trunk” like the ONVO L90, the headlights and bumper design are unmistakable.

As with NIO’s latest lineup, the ES8 adopts a unified lighting style. But unlike the “5566” series, the higher-positioned ES8 features a dual-layer DRL design, raising the hood line and enhancing its presence.
These lights, dubbed “Double Dash Crystal DRLs,” use a faceted, diamond-like surface that creates jewel-like reflections. Beyond visual impact, the intricate detail reinforces the ES8’s identity as a premium model.
Longest Tail Light in Class
At the rear, the ES8 boasts what NIO calls the “longest-in-class” light bar—stretching 2,264 mm across. It integrates 600 LEDs and 480 “SuperRed” LED units, with additional dual-layer elements at each end. NIO refers to this setup as the “Three-layer Phoenix Feather Tail Lamp.”

While the video doesn’t fully reveal the rear design, glimpses suggest a noticeably different treatment compared to the ET9.
Luxury Second and Third Rows
Inside, the ES8 emphasizes rear-seat luxury. The second row alone features at least two screens: a 21.4-inch ceiling-mounted display with 3K resolution, up to 1,000 nits of brightness, full DCI-P3 coverage, and support for Dolby Vision/HDR-Vivid, plus a control screen positioned near the rear air vents.

Complementing the cinema-like screen setup, the ES8 is equipped with three zero-gravity seats (front passenger and both second-row seats). The second-row seats offer 26-way adjustability, with the right-hand seat able to slide laterally by 150 mm—allowing the two seats to merge.

The third row reclines up to 130 degrees, which NIO claims is “best in class,” though its effect on trunk space remains to be seen.
Premium Materials and Craftsmanship
The ES8’s cabin surfaces span 52 square meters of soft-touch materials from the first row to the rear. Upholstery uses Nappa leather shared with the ET9, while trim features “Cloud Shadow” real wood. Even the headliner and door storage bins are wrapped in microfiber suede to enhance tactile quality and reduce noise.

Other crafted details include “Cosmic Startrail” speaker grilles, Layered Landscape Embroidery on the seats, and diamond-pattern quilting. These meticulous touches reinforce NIO’s stated goal: to embody a new kind of luxury—no longer quiet and understated, but bold and proudly on display.
More details will be confirmed during the pre-sale launch on the evening of August 21. For now, the all-new ES8 has already signaled that it intends to redefine what a flagship luxury SUV can be.
