China’s September power battery installations hit 76.0 GWh, with CATL accounting for 42.81%

The top three companies in China’s NEV market by power battery installation volume in September were CATL (32.51 GWh), BYD (16 GWh), and CALB (5.6 GWh).

On October 14, the China Automotive Power Battery Industry Innovation Alliance released the “September 2025 Power Battery Monthly Report,” indicating strong growth across multiple metrics.

In terms of production, China’s total output of power and other batteries reached 151.2 GWh in September, up 8.3% month-on-month and 35.4% year-on-year. From January to September, the cumulative production of power and other batteries in China amounted to 1,121.9 GWh, representing a cumulative year-on-year increase of 51.4%.

Sales figures were equally impressive. In September, China’s sales of power and other batteries reached 146.5 GWh, rising 9.0% month-on-month and 42.2% year-on-year. Among these, power battery sales accounted for 110.5 GWh, making up 75.5% of total sales and serving as the dominant contributor.

Meanwhile, export business continued to expand. In September, China’s total exports of power and other batteries reached 26.7 GWh, increasing 18.2% month-on-month and 28.3% year-on-year, accounting for 18.2% of the month’s total sales.

Regarding installation volumes, China’s power battery installation volume reached 76.0 GWh in September, up 21.6% month-on-month and 39.5% year-on-year, with growth rates surpassing those of production and sales.

From a technical perspective, lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries continued to dominate the market. In September, LFP battery installation volume reached 62.2 GWh, accounting for 81.8% of the total installed capacity, with a 20.5% month-on-month increase and a 50.4% year-on-year increase. In contrast, nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) ternary battery installations reached 13.8 GWh, accounting for 18.2% of the total. Although this represented a 26.5% month-on-month increase, the year-on-year growth was only 5.2%.

By vehicle type, battery electric vehicles accounted for 81.8% of installations, up 47.5% year-on-year; plug-in hybrid models accounted for 18.1%, up 12.3% year-on-year; and fuel cell vehicle installations accounted for 0.04%, down 43.9% year-on-year.

Overall, in September, 35 power battery companies in China’s new energy vehicle market achieved installation support, one fewer than the previous year. The top 2, top 5, and top 10 power battery companies recorded installation volumes of 48.5 GWh, 61.6 GWh, and 71.8 GWh, respectively, accounting for 63.8%, 81.1%, and 94.4% of the total installations.
