Pony.ai’s Fourth-Gen Autonomous Trucks Set for 2026 Launch

The fourth-generation autonomous truck system reportedly has a designed service life of 20,000 hours, capable of supporting 1 million kilometers of freight operations.

On November 19, Pony.ai announced partnerships with SANY Heavy Truck and Dongfeng Liuzhou Motor. The three parties will jointly develop a fourth-generation autonomous truck family.

Reportedly, the fourth-generation autonomous truck system adopts a platform-based design with strong vehicle model adaptability.

The first two models will be based on the most advanced pure-electric platforms from SANY Heavy Truck and Dongfeng Liuzhou Motor. They are being developed for mass production targeting the thousand-unit scale, with initial deployments planned for next year.

According to official information, Pony.ai’s fourth-generation autonomous truck kit will utilize 100% automotive-grade components. It reuses most components from the new-generation Robotaxi autonomous kit, reducing the BOM cost per vehicle’s autonomous system by approximately 70% compared to the previous generation.

Furthermore, taking the “1+4” platooning solution (with the lead vehicle manned and following vehicles unmanned) as an example, calculations based on existing demonstration scenarios show it can reduce freight cost per kilometer by 29% and increase freight profit by 195% compared to traditional freight. Simultaneously, it is estimated to reduce carbon emissions per vehicle by about 60 tonnes annually.

The fourth-generation autonomous truck adopts the full-redundancy design and safety standards reused from the new-generation Robotaxi. Reports indicate the system has a designed service life of 20,000 hours, supporting 1 million kilometers of freight operation.

Public information shows that Pony.ai began developing autonomous truck technology in 2018. It currently operates a fleet of approximately 200 autonomous trucks, has achieved a total freight volume exceeding 1 billion tonne-kilometers, and has obtained the first or among the first autonomous truck road testing permits and freight transport operation licenses in multiple regions across China.
