BYD Signs Framework Deal with Deutsche Bahn to Supply 200 Electric Buses

The deal marks another major European public transport order for BYD, following previous deliveries to Singapore with 210 units, Belgium with 268 units, and Brazil with 194 units.

BYD has recently signed a framework agreement with Deutsche Bahn (DB), Germany’s largest public transport operator, to supply 200 battery-electric buses.

The vehicles will be manufactured at BYD’s Hungary plant and deployed across Germany’s long-distance and intercity public transport networks.

The order is part of Deutsche Bahn’s broader fleet renewal programme rather than a standalone project.

DB has previously announced its largest-ever bus procurement plan, aiming to introduce around 3,300 hybrid or fully electric buses between 2027 and 2032, with a total contract value exceeding €1 billion. Of these, 200 long-distance battery-electric buses have been confirmed for supply by BYD.

BYD’s expanding manufacturing footprint in Europe has been a key enabler of the partnership.

On September 26 this year, BYD’s Hungary bus plant rolled out its 1,000th electric bus, a B12.b model specifically built for the German market.

The two companies already have an operational track record. BYD has previously delivered 54 electric buses to Deutsche Bahn, which are now in service in regions including Frankfurt and Schleswig-Holstein.

Operational feedback shows stable performance in driving range, passenger capacity and total lifecycle cost.

The newly signed agreement covers four models: the BYD B12.b, B12.b LE, B13.b and B15, addressing a wide range of use cases including urban commuting, intercity routes and long-distance passenger transport.

Among them, the latest-generation B12.b series is equipped with BYD’s in-house Blade Battery and CTC cell-to-chassis integration technology, with targeted optimisation in safety and space efficiency to meet Germany’s stringent public transport standards.

Since entering the German market in 2020, BYD has secured more than 500 electric bus orders in the country.

Over 300 units are already in operation in cities such as Berlin, Munich and Düsseldorf, giving BYD an estimated market share of around 15% and placing it at the top among Chinese electric bus brands in Germany.
