FAW’s Hongqi Starts On-Vehicle Testing of All-Solid-State Battery

According to the plan, China FAW’s self-developed solid-state batteries are slated for mass production by the end of 2027.

FAW’s Hongqi brand announced today that on December 31, 2025, the first self-developed all-solid-state battery pack from the R&D Headquarters was successfully installed and rolled off the pilot production line in a Hongqi Tiangong 06 model. This marks Hongqi’s official entry into a new stage of real-vehicle testing in the field of all-solid-state battery technology.

Officials stated that after 470 days of intensive efforts, the R&D Headquarters has achieved a series of phased breakthroughs in key areas such as sulfide electrolytes, 10Ah cell performance, and 60Ah cell processes.

The successful rollout of this first prototype vehicle signifies breakthroughs by Hongqi R&D in core domains including high-voltage-resistant module packaging and system lightweight integration.

As early as the WNAT-CES 2025 held in early December 2025, Jiang Wenhu, Vice President of the China FAW Hongqi Brand Operation Committee, revealed the company’s clear timeline for solid-state batteries.

Jiang Wenhu stated that by the end of 2027, China FAW’s self-developed solid-state batteries will be officially installed on Hongqi brand’s high-end flagship sedans and high-end flagship SUVs, achieving simultaneous mass production.

Hongqi is not the only automaker targeting the solid-state battery track. Since entering 2025, mainstream automakers have intensively disclosed their own plans for installing solid-state batteries, with target timelines highly concentrated around 2026 to 2027.

According to public information, Dongfeng Motor has currently built and put into use a 0.2GWh solid-state battery pilot line, with 350Wh/kg solid-state batteries expected to be mass-produced and installed in vehicles by September 2026. Subsequently, at the end of November, GAC Group announced it had taken the lead in building the country’s first large-capacity all-solid-state battery pilot production line. BYD plans to initiate batch demonstration and installation applications for all-solid-state batteries around 2027, with promotion to mainstream electric vehicles by 2030.
