GAC Aion, Didi Deliver Mass-Produced L4 Robotaxi R2 for Commercial Operations

The L4 Robotaxi R2 integrates Didi’s L4 full-stack autonomy with GAC Aion’s EV manufacturing platform.

On January 23, GAC Aion and Didi Autonomous Driving officially completed the mass-production delivery of their next-generation L4 Robotaxi, the R2, at a GAC Aion manufacturing facility.

The delivered R2 is China’s first front-installed, mass-produced autonomous vehicle designed specifically for commercial operations.

It combines GAC Aion’s vehicle manufacturing capabilities with Didi’s full-stack L4 autonomous driving technology.

The vehicle is built on GAC Aion’s AEP3.0 premium electric platform and Xingling electronic and electrical architecture, with its body structure, electronic architecture and functional layout fully redesigned around driverless operating scenarios.

On the technology front, the R2 is equipped with 33 high-precision sensors and the industry’s first mass-produced tri-domain integrated computing brain, delivering more than 2,000 TOPS of total computing power while reducing system costs by 74%.

In terms of safety, the vehicle has obtained both China and European five-star safety certifications and features full-chain redundancy across perception, decision-making, execution and vehicle-level systems.

To meet commercial operating requirements, the R2 is fitted with a 17.3-inch roof-mounted entertainment display, a front external interaction screen and intelligent voice-based vehicle controls.

Rear passenger space has been specifically expanded, and a UV sterilization system is standard equipment to support high-frequency public transport use.

In April 2024, GAC Aion and Didi Autonomous Driving established a joint venture, Guangzhou Andi Technology, with each party holding a 50% stake, aimed at advancing the mass production of L4 autonomous vehicles.

It is also worth noting that in October last year, Didi completed a Series D financing round of RMB 2 billion ($281 million).

The company stated that the funds will be fully allocated to AI research and the commercialization of L4 autonomous driving, accelerating the transition of Robotaxi services from pilot programs to scaled operations.
