On July 24, a camouflaged XPeng G9L prototype was spotted undergoing road testing on public streets in Thailand.
Images shared online show the vehicle wearing blue-and-white camouflage with XPENG branding, indicating it is undergoing overseas validation testing.
The sighting comes just one week after overseas media photographed the G9L testing in Munich, Germany, suggesting the model has entered the global validation phase ahead of its market launch.
The prototype retains XPeng’s signature split-headlight design, featuring slim daytime running lights above and a sculpted front bumper.
Its overall styling closely matches the version previously disclosed through China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) regulatory filings.
According to the filing, the G9L can be regarded as the five-seat variant of the GX and an extended-wheelbase version of the current G9.
The SUV measures 5,120 mm in length, 1,999 mm in width and 1,782 mm in height, with optional heights of 1,788 mm and 1,795 mm, while its wheelbase stretches to 3,100 mm.
Compared with the current G9, overall length has increased by 229 mm.
The G9L will be offered in both battery electric (BEV) and extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) versions.
The BEV lineup will include rear-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive variants.
The rear-wheel-drive model is equipped with a 270 kW motor, while the all-wheel-drive version pairs a 160 kW front motor with a 270 kW rear motor.
Battery options for the BEV version include 91.9 kWh and 110 kWh packs, with customers able to choose either ternary lithium or lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries.
CLTC-rated driving range is expected to span 672 km to 805 km.
The EREV version adopts XPeng’s Kunpeng extended-range system and comes standard with a 63.3 kWh LFP battery paired with a 110 kW 1.5-liter turbocharged range extender.
The rear-wheel-drive EREV uses a 210 kW rear motor, while the all-wheel-drive version adds a 160 kW front motor.
WLTC-rated electric-only range reaches 325 km for the rear-wheel-drive model and 350 km for the all-wheel-drive version.
The RMB 250,000 ($37,000) to RMB 350,000 ($51,700) large five-seat SUV segment has become one of China’s most competitive vehicle categories.
Models such as the Li Auto L7 and AITO M7 already holding significant market share. Once launched, the G9L is expected to compete directly in this segment.
Successive overseas testing campaigns in Germany and Thailand also indicate that the G9L is being developed with international markets in mind rather than solely for China.
In recent years, XPeng has accelerated its expansion across Europe and Southeast Asia.
Conducting overseas validation before launch has become an integral part of the company’s global vehicle development strategy.
